I tend to poke around ebay without really looking to buy anything and once in a great while, I will see somthing that gets me thinking.

Does anyone have any experience with pre-owned business laptops? I mean, I know about this kind of business, its advantages and possible disadvantages. But who's a good dealer and who are fakes? What should I look into? Thinkpads or Armadas?

I really don't know half as much about PC's as I think I do, and far, far less about laptops. A little advice, or possible horror story, would help me out a lot!

Personally I wouldn't trust any used laptop without being able to examine and try it out first.

For one thing, unless you are really lucky the battery on most business laptops will be completely shot by the time they scrap it.

Second, business people who don't actually own the laptop are notoriously bad about taking good care of them so they tend to take a real beating while travelling, get food/drink all over them etc. etc.

Third, if the laptop is fairly current you can almost be certain it is a lemon or else why would they be selling it? No matter what the brand, you will occassionally get a laptop that just doesn't work as well as it should.

In any event, an IBM, Compaq, or Toshiba laptop would be your best bet. They all tend to be fairly durable. Be sure to stay far away from Gateways - they are cheaply made junk and are nothing but trouble.

I would never buy a computer from eBay. Period.

Another suggestion to what JSBB had is a Dell Latitude.

Thanks guys. That's pretty much what I was thinking. Guess I'll just spend the money to upgrade my PC. Rather build it myself and know it works than, well, not!
