[IMG] I'm not the biggest hockey fan, but watching the world championships is always fun. So, who'll win? I know only listed the top 8 teams, but do tell if you think some other team will win.

Sweden! Yeah! Although I wonder how they are going to do it without all the superstars...

I missed a few countries on the list for regular hockey: Australia, Argentina, Netherlands, Germany, Pakistan...

So this is about Ice Hockey, right?

What type of hockey is this? Also, are we talking about mens hockey or women's hockey?

Aren't Pakistan, India, and Netherlands usually up there? I know we always seem to lose to China as well.

    Ohhhhhhh Caaaaannnnnaaaaddddaaaa!!!

Of course we'll win it. It's OUR game. :p

Right now I'm having flashbacks of Gretzky and Lemieux shredding the Russians apart during the '88 Canada Cup. Ahhhh, the good ol' days. *sigh*

Yes it it' Ice Hockey. Forgot about 'normal' hockey, I think we call it land hockey or something. I also forgot to put the option 'other', but I don't see the other teams having much of a chance at winning. It is a very uneven tournament 7-8 good teams 2-3 ok teams and 6-7 pretty hopeless teams.

@ Bahir: Ditto for Finland :D

It's kind of funny how Canada does so well in ice hockey but not in field hockey. How different can the general concepts be? :p

It will be three straight titles now eh?

Sweden. We have come in second place the last two years, and last years losing game against Canada was outrageous.

Also, Sweden plays better without all the stars like Forsberg and those other overpayed meatbags. I say get rid of them.

Canada. Martin Brodeur has shown at the Olympics in 2002 and the World Cup in 2004 that he is the Worlds Greatest Goalie. When it comes to Ice Hockey, Canada is the Greatest. We're even better than the yanks think they are...

Russia looks strong, almost terrifyingly strong. Plus they are this time even very well motivated and their team seems to work well. I'll predict them for the gold like Sir Bel. They haven't won in a long time and they most certainly have the skill and capability to win, it's all about gathering the right team from the large pack of stubborn individuals and this year their team looks very very good like I said.

Finland and Slovakia is in the game with basic squadrons. It might take them to the bronze or even silver medal with luck but not further. Without luck they will stumble out early against Chechz Republic, Russia, Canada or USA. Both of them should have what it takes to walk over Sweden though.

Sweden looks weak this year, they might pull off something surprising but the fact is that even though they did well in the last couple of championships their hockey is not doing all that well. Not to mention that their goaltending is somewhere between bad and horrible.

USA has a lot of expirience and skill I do however have the feeling that they will stumble in front of Russia or Canada in the tournament, and then lack the motivation in the bronze match and therefore loose it.

You can never count out the Chechz Republic. I however do not think that they'll have what it takes this year. I'll tip them for the bronze still.

Germany can't do much I'm afraid. They will loose against all the big teams. Their tactics are however so annoying that they will keep the match pretty even until their opponent manages to run over their defence with pure skill.

Finally we have Canada. They are on the paper the best team and the most probable winner. This time they'll play a bad match against Russia and end up with silver.

    Summary
    Gold: Russia
    Silver: Canada
    Bronze: Chechz Republic

There's my amateur analysis of the World Championships this year. I sure hope that Finland would make it far but we lack material because of numerous refusals and injuries. I do think we'll beat Sweden though. ;)

You were probably in North Dakota during tourist season. Trust me, we're just figments of everyone's imagination. :p
Everyone (well, every Canadian, anyway) talks about the 1972 series. But I agree, the 1988 series was much more exciting. IIRC, the 3 games ended 6-5; the first two went to OT, and the last game was decided in the last minute (or two) - Hawerchuk to Gretzky to Lemieux. Fantastic.

Anyway, on topic - since we just beat the powerhouse of Latvia, Canada looks to be a the odds-on favourite.

Latvia has been impressive in the tournament so far, they really deserved to win that match against the US. Tomorrow is the first big game for Finland against Sweden which will truly show our form.

Looks like we all got it wrong.

    Congrats to the Czechs.

Well, here comes another couple months without hockey.
