Ok, I was just wondering what you guys think about those mods that totally overhaul the game into something totally different. Also, would you ever download, install, and play a TC Mod?

Personally, I don't like them...if I wanted a different game I'd go out and buy a new one. Also, the ones that I know of are enormous in size and are almost impossible for the poor folks that are stuck with 56k modems. Not to mention the massive amout of buggs they seem to be plauged by... :bang:

    Anyway, let me know. :rolling:

Games eventually get a bit redundant, I would like to change it a bit, so as to get fun out of it continously.

There are various key problems with TCs:

They are rarely finished. Hundreds of people start hugely ambitious projects and are later forced to give up.

They're inevitably going to be huuuuuuuuge. I believe Minto's ToIW project is currently somewhere around 700MB. However, having said this, the bulk normally comes from new area art, and TISpack can compress this down pretty substantially.

There's more scope for bugs than with smaller mods. However, I think anyone who says "omg all tcs r buggy!!!!111lolol" is sorely mistaken, since with fairly extensive testing, the majority of bugs can be eliminated.

Just a few thoughts. Having said that, however, I do find them largely preferable to a constant stream of new NPCs for BG2.

I'll also add to Kitrax: if people want another IE game, they aren't going to go out and buy one, because no more are being made. So total conversions it is.

I have nothing but admiration for the people that make (and finish) good Total Conversions. I know how time consuming making even a single new-NPC can be, and can imagine how much time goes into the TCs.

That said, would I ever download and install one? I'd doubt it, for the simple reason that they are generally incompatible with any other mods, barring people modding the TC, which I doubt will ever happen. The download size of them doesn't bother me (except for it burns up HD-space pretty quickly.) I might install and play one through once or twice, but then the unlikeliness of modding the TC would probably cause me to dump it.

I have to say I agree with SimDing0. The idea of a Total Conversion is nothing more than a solution to make a new game without building the engine, simply because the Engine is either very suitable, or the original Game content is not far from what the TC will contain. As for the bugs, just because it is a completely new game inside another, that makes it possible to eliminate most bugs that would occur from the coexistence of the mod and the game (like addon mods).
As for the result TCs have on the game, I only have to say look at DLTC: The graphics are 2 times better than BG2 ones, not to mention how better they look than BG1 graphics.
As for the 56k modem, I am on a 44k and still have no problem sharing my TC with the Team Members (at least right now that it is in an early stage)
