When I've fiddled with Archers in the past, I've always gone with Long or Short Bows. Since I'm trying something brand new, I'm considering Crossbows. Minnie won't have the STR for the good Longbows.

Link 1 and Link 2 to the Minnie threads.

Also, Minnie will have grown up in Candlekeep, away from Elven influences. Remember, I'll be playing her from the very beginning with BGTutu. :)

Just save up for the Hill Giant Strengh Girdle from the adventurer's mart in the promenade right from the beginning and then take long bows. I don't like the RoF with crossbows so that pretty much answered your question: long bows. Archery in BG is crazy!

And what am I supposed to do for a missile weapon until then? Remember, I'm starting this character in BG1, and want to import the same proficiencies.

I voted for crossbows. Arrows may be more abundent, but there are magical bolts you find sooner - Polymorph: Squirrel? (c'mon, who hasn't tried it?) You can find a bucket load on the undead around Bassilus, which kept me going through to the battle with Sarevok.

In BG2, I find more magic bolts - +1 and +2, stunning and lightning - than magic arrows. You can get the Firetooth very early if you put off Gaelyn and Bodhi.

I say go with slings and dual her to a cleric. She'll have 17 WIS at the end of BG1, and the STR & DEX requirements can be taken care of by items.

Fel, she's an Elf. Besides, the Archer kit only allows ** in Sling.

Are you sure? Because I thought it was any missile weapon. It's moot anyway, though, if you can't go Cleric; being a cleric is the only reason to use a sling.

Yes, archer only allows 2* in slings which really needs fixed, imo.

    Crossbows still rule for me!

Once you get to Watcher's keep, you can get Firetooth, which is admittedly a pretty nice Xbow.

Both BG1 and BG2 have Xbows of Speed for the extra attack.

However, both games have as good or better shortbows; BG1 has the Eagle Bow +2, BG2 has Tuigan at the very beginning and Gesen later on.

It's almost a wash, but shortbows seem to have the edge in terms of power...so purely in terms of power, you'd probably want shortbows.

Then again, xbows might be an interesting change of pace, and, like with halberds for melee, while there isn't as much variety and perhaps slightly less power available, they could still be interesting to play with. If you're looking for a new experience, I'd recommend the Xbows and actually use all the bolts of biting/lightning/whatever this time around. And Firetooth is awfully nice.

For the record, you'll still want to dump a star or two into slings for Everard's +5 to go lich hunting, like I mentioned in the other thread.

Unfortunately, with Minnie's minimal STR stat (13) it's hard to carry anything other than a short bow.

Back to the ol' drawing board! ;)
