I'm a huge believer in multiclassed and dual-classed characters. I love being multi-talented, and having a choice between strongholds is really cool. The multiple HLA pools is awesome as well.

I'm also a big fan of a 4 character group. I think it's easier to manage, and I enjoy the faster rate of gaining XP (which helps with the multiclassed characters too!).

That being said, what type of character best fits in with this party?:

    Jaheira
    Jan
    Aerie

Of this group, Jaheira is the only character in this group who can fight in melee effectively. So, obvoiusly my protagonist has got to be character who can tank when needed.

    My options are as follows:

Cleric/Ranger: Great tank, but there might be too much divine magic in this group then. I'll also miss out on useing some awesome weapons if I use a Cleric as my protagonist (I mean, do I really want Jan using Celestial Fury?).

Fighter/Mage: Pretty cool. I'm not a huge fan of arcane magic either, but I'd rather have more too much arcane than too much divine.

Fighter/Illusionist: Same as above, but with better saves, a less buggy romance, and an extra spell per level.

Fighter/Thief: Best set of HLAs in the game, IMHO. Might be kind of redundant with Jan in the party, but this is a very powerful character. I do worry about tanking power, since he won't be wearing great armor, and doesn't have stoneskin or ironskin to protect him (as do the other characters). If you choose this option, please give a suggestion on race, since there are so many different great options.

Fighter/Mage/Thief: This is a legit option since I'll have only four party members. While Jan would initially specialize in locks and traps, this character could specialize in stealthy operations.

Fighter/Mage/Cleric: Too much divine still, and I don't dig the weapon restrictions I detailed above. Plus, there's only one Robe of Vecna, and Aerie deserves it!

If you have another suggestion, I'd love to hear it. I also welcome all constructive criticism. TIA

If I were you I'd dump Arie (besides how annoying she is she's also incredibly fragile), pick up Minsc or Korgan, and make your own mage/cleric. If you make him evil you can also enjoy turning armies of undead into enslaved minions.

Me personally I'd use what I just finished the game with, 13th Kensai dualled to a Mage, if have the additional merchants, Dakkon's Zerth blade and Celestial Fury in each hand, awesome. You get extra spells because of the Zerth blade, His lack of armour can be compensated by Stoneskin, Spirit Armour etc. The only downsides to this build IMHO are you can't use a sling when being a Mage only (ie before you reach 14th level); and you can't be a specialist mage, for me I'd love to be Kensai/Conjurer, Kensai/Evoker.

Though I suspect people will tell me you could SK it, but I don't have or use SK :p

Really nice party idea Klorox! I'd go for Elven Fighter/Mage. Multiclassed, for relatively slow leveling. Fi/Ma adds helluva lot of tanking power and you really can't have too much arcane power in BG2. I like thieves though but two of them in the four person party is bit waste. One multiclassed thief covers all thief you need.

One bad side in this party is that it needs much micromanagement. For my tastes atleast. If that's not problem for you this party will rock, especially later in the game.

I'd go with a half-elf F/T like I'm using right now. Just make him concentrate on backstabbing since you've got Jan for the other stuff anyway and you're already covered by Jaheira and Aerie for divine and arcane magic. just keep a lot of invisibility potions handy as well as that blue ring you get early on.

Try a Half-Orc Cleric/Thief. I am having a blast with my character. I am playing him in BGT and right now I am going through Cloakwood. My character is one of the tanks, the main thief and the main divine caster.

The three by themselves make a pretty decent team. Anything else would be almost superfluous. OTOH, there's Carsomyr to consider. I think a Paladin (perhaps an Inquisitor) would be a great primary tank to add to this party. Or you could go with a fighter instead; perhaps a Berserker for the rage.

If you take a fighter/thief you'll have exactly two of each class:

    - 2 fighters
    - 2 thieves
    - 2 clerics
    - 2 mages

I'd take an half-orc since there are enough little people in your party already. If you haven't romanced enough yet use the mod.

Other multiclasses are probably stronger, but I doubt you need an easier game.

If I really wanted Carsomyr, I could go with a Fighter/Thief too! ;)

I'm trying this with a Gnome Fighter/Illusionist, and it's working pretty good so far. I am worried about combat though, I'm always taking a lot of damage.

I'm at the point where everybody has just learned stone/ironskin, so that should change a lot.

I'd take the Cleric / Ranger, the Crom Faeyr (sp?) dual wielded with the upgraded flail of ages or upgraded mace of disruption (for an undead killing machine) is just as powerfull as most weapons. And if you find you have all your divine magic catered for just stock up on the ironskins and healing, you can never have to many healing spells can you? :p But i have to warn you im very biased towards this multiclass. :p

Cleric / Ranger is powerful, but probably too powerful to be any fun unless you are soloing or have a small party.

I'd say a Fighter/Mage best fits your current party selection. Like you said, too much divine and not enough melee specialist. Also...you can never have too many mages in the party...I mean, its always useful to have an extra character churning out Fireballs and Breaches...

Fighter/Mage, definetly! It'll give you the two things you're currently short of - melee and arcane magic - and it is truly a fun class to play as well.

A Fighter/Illusionist would give you an extra spell, though personally I never play with an Illusionist (except for Jan, but that's for his role-playing value), since I find Necromancy to good to be left out. If you're to waste a slot for a Mage, let him/her be capable of casting Necromancy.

    Update:

I've gotten deep into Chapters 2/3 with two different protagonists: a FMT and a F/Ill.

both are fun, both are powerful, but I don't feel like I have enough "tanking" power here. I might be ditching this idea. :(

Klorox try a Half-Orc Cleric/Swashbuckler. My character has a -4 AC and has a THACO of 9 at level 7/8. This character after picking up the tome of Con can regenerate HP, has a strength of 19 to start, and with the swashbuckler class starts off with a lower AC. Add the cleric buffing spells and you have yourself a very good tank.

Give this character a try and let me know how it works out. Of course you have to have BGTutu or BGT and shadowkeeper installed to play this type of character.

I was thinking of playing a Cleric/Ass. but decided on the Swashbuckler because he was going to be one of my main tanks.

In saying you feel the party lacks tanking power do you mean that your frontliner(s) are taking too much damage, or not dishing enough out?

Either F/Ill or F/M/T can do both well but take a while to get there. Jaheira, well equipped and with Ironskins, can be exceptionally good in both aspects as well (much earlier).

As for Ranger/Cleric, it's a real powerhouse, yet personally I would find it a bit boring with your party, not because it is too powerful, but just because of weapon limitations. I feel there are plenty of nice *pointy* weapons in the game and it's just nice to include those in the mix, and with a R/C you can't - worse (purely from a variety and not a power point-of-view) the only ranged options for 3/4 of such a party is slings - ewww. :)
