When my morning 50-minute train ride turned into a 110-minute excursion between a different train, a bus, and the subway, I got to wondering about how other people get around.

I spend 5 min in the car getting to the train, an hour and twenty minutes on the train, and then a 10 minute walk to my office....each way.

Yeah, kinda a pain, but I love the new neighborhood. On a plus side, I've finished IWD2, 3 books and gotten caught up at work ... and I've only been doing this commute for a month.

    :good:

To bad you can't select multible options. If it is close by I usually take my bicycle. If it is further away I take the train.

It is a miracle if the public transportation runs in time in my country.

[IMG] Welcome to the Netherlands! We are glad to show you how the Dutch Railways ask more and more money for more and more problems. As you will probably notice soon enough on your ment-to-be short trip, we will first let you wait for a litle while and an other while before your train arives. Lets start gambling: IF the train arrives, then at what platform will that be? We have numbers 1 to 16. Take your pick. Well, too bad! The train didn't arrive. Dutch Railways have sent busses to transport you. They will be waiting for you at the busstops left of the main entrance. No wait! YOU will be waiting for them. Meanwhile your train DID arrive at platform number 6. So you are informed that your train is ready for depart at platform number 16. And so you just happen to miss your train, eventhough it was 45 minutes late, and decide to pick the bus. That bus will take you from Rotterdam Central Station to Rotterdam-Lombardije. When you arrive (at Rotterdam-South), you have a few moments to get on the train taking you further to the south. Back at Rotterdam CS you start to get hungry and decide to buy some food. By a miracle you got on the train. Notice: Pigs and chicken are not allowed to be transported this way. Motto: What Germans did 60 years ago, we can do better (No offens ment). You arrive at Zwijndrecht and the train stops! But before you can put your feet on the platform, you are pressed back into the train by impatient travelers and taken to the next railway-station. Since this is the train's final stop, you have a good chance to get out. When you leave the platform (you start to get sick of trains) you have to show your season-ticket, which is expired by now, because its friday and 4 minutes past 7. After you payed your bill (you couldnt pay cash, because you spent your money on food, so you had to pay more, PINned), you get on the bus. Later you get on the boat and walk home.
How was your trip? Has been worse...

    edit:
    I choose Train, 10 to 20 miles, 60 minutes+

I drive everywhere. Should ride my bike and lose weight, but the convenience of driving is too tough to pass up.

When I lived in Japan, I rode a bike (cars are expensive there!) took the bus, or rode the train. The public transport in Japan is pretty efficient, though. I feel bad for the people suffering under systems like those described by Master of Nuhn.

I have a 15-minute (8-mile) drive to the train station, followed by a 50-minute ride (during which I've made a lot of friends!), then a 10-minute (8-block) walk. The walk can be partially underground on nasty days, and there are plenty of places to get breakfast or ingredients for dinner along the way. It's long but nice.

However, if I didn't have to pick up my son at daycare in the evening, I'd ride my bicycle to the train station. But with the school's rigid closing time, I'd be riding in the dark to catch a train early enough to allow me a complete workday. Not a good thing in an area with no bikepaths and drivers who aren't accustomed to bike traffic.

Here's today's saga: My regular train (R3) was discontinued because of an overnight freight derailment. So I pick up a neighbor and we head off to another train (R2), only to find that many overhead lines are down between us and the city (this problem also affects the R5). So we herd off to catch a bus (#22) with the rest of the passengers - three go by before we can get on. This bus gets us to a subway stop, where we take the Broad Street Line to 8th and Market, which is a mere 4 blocks' walk to the office. Whew!

SEPTA doesn't stand for the "SouthEastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority," it means "Society for the Elimination of Public Transportation Altogether!"

[IMG] Hey! I sometimes take the R2 from Wilmington to Philly...What a small world! Delaware has no real public transportation, so I just drive most of the time.

Door to door ~25 mins by car. Home to work that is.

I used to catch the bus, but the service is poor so when I could afford a car I got one. The bus journey used to be 15min walk 50min on bus + 10min walk.

I do like the car journey better.

Since my apartment is across the street from the campus I teach at, I can walk to work, but for everything else, I have to drive my car (no such thing as public transportation where I live).

20 minutes walk to school and another back. 35 mins to the city, which is to say that the distances aren´t anything 'great.' Still, a bus is a luxury -shame that it´s a bit too expensive to my thin students wallet.

I take the bus. It's a 2-mile trip directly to the school (that's something like .9 kilometers for you metric brutes out there ;) ), but we have pick up people on the way, and go out of the way into other neighborhoods. The whole trip is probably 4 miles or something. And school buses aren't especially fast. Takes fifteen minutes or so, all in all. Great in the morning, where I'm lethargic on the bus. Sucks in the afternoon, when I can't wait to come to SP. :D
