In my 157834720th runthrough of Baldur's Gate, this time with a party that destroyed itself through infighting (I never knew Shar-teel and Eldoth along with Kagain and Yeslick would fight), I discovered what appears to be a contradiction in the story. In Gorion's note after returning to Candlekeep, he tells you that he was your mother's friend and lover. However, in TOB, the celestial tell you that you were raised in a temple of Bhall and your mother was a priestess of him, and the Harpers along with Gorion rescued you. Did Gorion lie to you in his note? Or was this an oversight by the developers? Or did Gorion really befriend and love an evil priestess of the lord of murder?

Bigger picture: story was retconned for greater effect later, and this new thread also demonstrates (to both old and new players) just how much Gorion wanted to protect his foster child from his/her bloody origins
Story-wise: Gorion lied. He thought that it was in your best interests to do so. The celestial's version is what really happened.

As for the infighting you do get hints based on their overall character. Chauvinist pig vs misandrist, and patriotic/noble warrior vs immoral mercenary.
