Alright, I'd put the game aside for a few months, wiped my computer to deal with some bugs, have re-installed and am beginning anew from SoA. I've decided to multi-class and I want one of the classes to be a thief. I like to backstab. My question is this, as a M/T how effective is backstabbing? It seems like you might be stuck backstabbing and then running or relying on spell protections to try to get some spells off while a F/T ought to be able to backstab and then just wade into the thick of things. Are my assumptions correct?

Just make a Fighter/mage/Thief and you got the best of both worlds

..... or the worst of all worlds :D a little bit of everything without the real excellence a pure or two-class char can achieve

I'd take the mage thief because it is way more interesting and subtle than the fighter-thief. Sure the fighter-thief has an excellent punch as a backstabber and even as a ranged and melee fighter; the mage-thief has his spells giving him a much wider flexibility - and actually you don't need more than * for a sucessful backstab. Usually I found my fighter-thiefs, though awesome, boring to play at higher levels (first time through excluded).

So I'd opt for mage-thief (I actually prefer the gnomish illusionist-thief here), proficient with shortswords or scimitars and daggers, shortbows or darts.

If I don't go mad and play a wizardslaying dwarven darter and axe or b'sword wielder, then I'll choose a mage-thief or illusionist-thief.

Yeah Mage/Thief, since these are two classes which are very fun to play, and you pretty much need. Of course, it's possible to beat the game with a solo fighter or whatever, but it's a lot easier and fun with mages and theives. Also you'll have a greater selection of weapons(I mean since you can't have more than +, not that they have more weapons to choose from), and you'll still be able to have a longsword in one hand and cast spells, always a plus :D.

Playing a fighter/thief, ESPECIALLY a Kensai/Thief is overkill. I mean, REALLY. 272 points on ONE hit? That's just wrong.

Thieves are supposed to be subtle, cunning characters. They AREN'T supposed to be able to plaster the walls with every opponent they meet, unless it's with some sort of explosive device :D

Mage/Thief is a more realistic combination in my opinion, as it still allows for the two classes to be played as they should be. In fact, most find them to be amazingly complementary. A wand of fireball is ALMOST as good as a stick of dynamite!

Try a Half-Orc Cleric/Theif. I know it sounds odd, but IMO this is a very potent class, combining the abilities of two overlooked classes. I'm pretty sure you *can* backstab with clubs too! So just put whatever cleric weapon you normally use in main slot and club in the second for backstabbing. I'm not sure about backstabbing with staves in ToB, but I've never tried it because I'm always using a shield with him. Another great thing about this class is that you can still wear armor and use all of your abilities, unlike a mage/theif.

The fighter/thief/mage isn't bad. His magic abilities are limited, but he can be an average fighter and a good thief. So you may try it, I have one, and I'm really satisfied with him.

[IMG] I recommend a mc F/T. In ToB mc is supreme compared to dual class.
My preferred party with an evil F/T is Korgan, Viconia, Edwin and naturally Sarevok once you get into ToB. Keep Imoen around too because of her connection with you and the storyline even though her alignment is good.

The F/M/T is excellent in TOB seeing it will be able to cast 8th level spells in the end (though you will only get to that level if you either solo or play the game more than once). I soloed a F/M/T for a while and it was alot of fun to play, as well as being very powerful.

    Cheers,

I'm soloing a M/T in SoA at the moment, and I think the only weak spot is his lack of melee ability. You can get round that by summoning help, then darting off to hide and backstab or cast again when the enemy is otherwise occupied. Sometimes it is possible to go toe-to-toe with enemies, it just takes a long time to bring them down.
