PCMCIA modem (does it even exist?) VS External modem

    My buddy's father brought his laptop to me a few days ago. He told me he couldn't connect to the Internet. I took a closer look at the laptop, and check the device manager - no network card, or modem, for that matter.

    He lives in a place where high-speed internet is still a fantasy, which means a 56K connection. Since the laptop in question has no modem, I have two options to suggest him, which are, as the title says, either an external 56K modem or a PCMCIA, if such a thing even exist.

    Supposing a PCMCIA modem exist, which would be cheaper between the external modem and the PCMCIA card? He's on a tight budget, so I'm trying to keep costs to a minimum... in fact, I'm not even charging for the job I did on the laptop.

    They do exist, yes. Looking at Newegg, the prices are from around $40 to $65. You're likely to find them much cheaper on your local eBay type sites though, since this is really outdated stuff at this point, so there's not much point buying new ones.
