PC Crash

    I try to play BG1 again but the game freezes all the time (hard reset needed). I have Dx9 on the computer. It's so frustrating that I tried to install Tutu, but the exe of Tutu crashes as well...
    Has anybody some XP in the matter? Thanks.

    Yes, BG1 always freezes my PC as well. So I have experience in this matter. My solution was to stop playing it.

    I never really experienced game freezes (a couple of minor crashes but that's about it)

    Just wondering: What operating system is your computer using Capt? Is the game fully patched? Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the game or even custom (aka Full) install? Also Tutu only works properly with a full install of BG.

    One of the biggest problems with games hanging is incompatibility with the graphics card. This would be the best place to look first. Even with Dx9 it doesn't mean all will work smoothly. Is your graphics card fully Dx9 compat? Have you got the latest drivers for your card? Try running BG in a less demanding mode - there are options in the config to do this.

    The latest official patch fixed loads of game problems, but there was an unsupported patch that made some fixes for Dx8 (I think) and it might be worth checking to see if this resolves the problem you are encountering.

    Thanks for your answers anyway. It's Win98SE and the video card is a TNT2M64. I once run BG1 on this computer, but since then I added stuff, hardware, software. It used to run with only 1 or 2 (!!!) crashes by session, but for some reason I had to install DX9, and I suspect that's the main reason it's become unplayable. I will try and get DX7 or something back one day, but that means a WIN98 reinstall. Oh, I tried various patches, with them the game doesn't freeze but it crashes another way. And worse, the NoCD patch doesn't work anymore (convenient when you have a full install). So like Harbourboy, I'm gonna leave BG1 for a time, and stick to BG2 instead. Because, on the same PC, BG2 never hangs!


    EDIT:
    Now I do have xp! I like to fiddle so I really crashed my OS, and I installed Win98SE again. It's directx 6.1a. I made a full install of BG1, with 140M cache, if it still has any purpose on a full install, applied the baldurdash and the noCD patches. All is running well now, on the same hardware. Not a single freeze up to now, after some hours (cleared the Nashkel mines). The only problem is that Khalid and Minsc are dead, but is it a problem? :)
