Hello! First of all, this post is mainly related to soloing, as it seems to be my preferred method of play. Although what I'm saying probably has some merit with party play, it also may be completely off the mark with regard to parties.

So basically, I've hit a stall point where I can't think of a unique PC to play. As far as I can tell, these are the general categories of PC:

    1. The backstabber/trapsetter (thief, assassin, bounty hunter, etc.)

    2. The backstabber/fighter (f/t, stalker, etc.)

    3. The gww warrior (fighters, pallys, monks, barbarians, etc.)

    4. the buffing caster (f/m, m/t, blade, f/c, r/c, cleric, shapeshifter, etc.)

    5. the pure offensive caster (wild mage, sorc, m/c, druid, etc.)

I can't manage to think of a character build that doesn't fall into one of these areas. Sure, there are minor variations among them, but they are all essentially the same thing. A berserker is just going to hardiness+gww his way through the game in the same way that a monk is, or an inquisitor is, or whoever else in category three.

What dismays me about this is that I've played a character in each of those categories, and now, even though I still love BGII, I can't get through the game with a new build because it ends up eventually shaping up to be just another one of the five categories. The other day, for example, I tried starting a monk, only to realize by the time I got to the underdark it was just a berserker with a different name and a slightly different means to achieve the same end. A monk has his saves, natural AC, and MR to get to the point where he gww's his opponents; a berserker has his equipment and rage he uses to get to the point to where he can gww his opponents.

So I guess apart from the general rant, my question would be what sort of builds have you guys come up with that doesn't just end up being the "same old" character as one of the five I listed? I'm looking for something unique and challenging. I'm willing to install mods of all sorts, but I'm not willing to install mods that make enemies blatently cheat/cheese to force new tactics on your part, and I'm also not willing to install superpower kits that make the game too easy (such as shapeshifter rebalance and druidic sorcerer).

phew... long post, but I hope it shall prove worthwhile!

If you're at a loss, try another class from category four, there's lots of variation there from what I can see.

Hmm, if you had Oversight mod's cool beyond words Monk only HLAs you may actually have fun with your monk and find a different built. Seriously try it, it will be very different and fun in tactical means, way different than plain GWWing, cool moves such as Dragon Fist, Tiger Strike, and numerous 'stance's really fun to use! Try them!

Then again you can always create a 'jack of all trades, master of none'. (I like this saying!)

Particularly a non-blade bard kit. He can be a buffing caster, a support caster, or pure offensive caster, or ranged attacker, or just singer. All depended upon your mood and enemies you face. Equip best ranged weapons, bards are lucky to get UAI HLA too. Then use wands, once you sell/re-buy them they will have hundred charges. Use fire/frost/lightning wands to deal damage to enemies, and your own spells to buff/protect. If spells fail, use your weapons! If all fails, sing! Especially improved bard song will really help the party! Try it! It will not be as powerful as a pure mage or fighter, but will be much more versatile and fun!
