[IMG] basically im trying for a grim reaper theme build purely with mage and palemaster, so what levels should i take in each for a highly effective spellcaster, reasonable melee'er with all palemaster spell like abilities and the exotic weapon feat(for scythes)

Palemaster levels don't give you more melee presence, they make you harder to kill in melee. It gives you bonuses to armour class, additional hitpoints and immunities to hold, stun, paralysis, and critical hits. It gives you additional spells per level per every 2 levels, but no addition caster levels.

So basically a Palemaster gives you extra defense in return for less caster levels. You'll gain no extra BAB for getting Palemaster levels, so you'll hit just as poorly as you would have done with a pure wizard or sorcerer.

For extra melee capabilities, you could take extra fighter levels for the weapon proficiencies, then add exotic weapon proficiency. I'd take 4 fighter levels in that case, and take weapon specialisation in Scythes.

To become a proficient spellcaster, I'd say to delay the palemaster levels as long as possible. On the other hand you wouldn't have much time to enjoy the immunities for long that way either, so I'd say this is up to personal preference. Me, I'd probably just take the palemaster levels as soon as possible anyway. NWN is generally not that hard on normal difficulties that you need to worry too much about having a most powerful build all the time.

Assuming you'd go through HotU, your maximum level is about 28, so if you take only wizard an palemaster levels, you should be able to cast lvl 9 spells and have immunity again critical hits by the end. If you do take a couple of fighter levels, you would start to sacrifice either one of these.

No, you wouldn't need to, but it would help as the fighter gets bonus feats every second level plus it would give you all the normal weapon proficiencies. You can get exotic weapons without a fighter too, but not the weapon specialisation feat.

ah, well im looking to do a build thats just wizard and palemaster, but im not sure if exotic weapons proficiency would be available at all with that. melee wouldnt be a focus, just so im not totally boned(no pun intended) if i run out of spells/abilities and i did find a damage calculation sheet online that showed scythes being the best weapons overall at pretty much all levels of specialization with melee, that and i scythe would really tie in the grim reaper theme character im trying to make

If you were willing to go out of character you could also be a cleric of Kelemvor. Though may mess with your pure mageness.
