It says that a Paladin gets first level spells at level 4. What it doesn't say, is that his spell progression is as follows:

    Code:
    Pal Lvl Spell Lvl
    ------- ---------
       4 1
       8 2
      11 3
      14 4
      17 5 (?)
      20 6 (?)

*(?) just guessing, as I haven't reached these levels yet.
So do I have a problem with my game? Or is a Paladin really so useless as a spell-caster?

And what is "caster level" for Paladin, Ranger and Bard?

[IMG] I thought it was like this:
    Pal-6: 1st level spells
    Pal-10: 2nd level spells
    Pal-12: 3rd level spells
    Pal-15: 4th level spells
    Pal-22: 5th level spells
    Pal-29: 6th level spells

[IMG] I checked the table that came in pdf-format with my game. That's were I got the information from. I didn't say it is as I posted, I said I thought it was.
It was as much an attempt to shed more light on the question as it was ironical about the information we get (or don't get) from the manual. No need to wave a finger at me :)

IMO Paladins are (still) useless spellcasters. The spells - once you actually get them - are really not that hot. Maybe those spells will prove useful in making the Paladin better at tanking in HoF mode? :hmm:

"IMO Paladins are (still) useless spellcasters. This is the correct paladin table (first column is pallie level, first row is spell level):
    Code:
    	1	2	3	4	5	6

    --------------------------------------------------

    4	1	0	0	0	0	0

    5	1	0	0	0	0	0

    6	1	0	0	0	0	0

    7	1	0	0	0	0	0

    8	1	1	0	0	0	0

    9	1	1	0	0	0	0

    10	1	1	0	0	0	0

    11	1	1	1	0	0	0

    12	1	1	1	0	0	0

    13	1	1	1	0	0	0

    14	2	1	1	1	0	0

    15	2	1	1	1	0	0

    16	2	2	1	1	0	0

    17	2	2	2	1	0	0

    18	3	2	2	1	0	0

    19	3	3	3	2	0	0

    20	3	3	3	3	0	0

    21	4	3	3	3	1	0

Any idea why the progression is so uneven? Normally it could have been just an initial delay of 4, but a normal speed like:
    4-1
    6-2
    8-3
    10-4
    etc..

And how do you figure out "caster level" of a Paladin, Ranger, Bard, for all those spells that use it?

I thing it's because IWD does not use core 3-rd Edition rules where paladins and rangers can get up to 4 lvl spells only.

[IMG] On the other hands - you only get the lvl-5 and 6 spells on truly epic levels - actually levels you can only reach in HoF mode - and no DM plays that way (hopefully :shake: ) ;)

So they might have been included to match the HoF CRPG conditions of getting the first +5 weapon in Targos after killing a puny goblin for 1350xp :D

Personally I like more Fighter 4\Paladin X - better tank since Clerics only receive +1 BAB every 3 from 4 levels and that's a whole attack more :D Not to mention weapon mastery.....

Paladin\Cleric?And how will you deal with ability points - need high str., con., wis., charisma and at least 13 points of dex.My paladin has 9 wis. at the beginning he'll never be a good cleric....
