Paladins and monks

    Normally they shouldn't be allowed to multiclass and advance further in their paladin or monk class. However, the level you can achieve in single class is half the total level you can achieve. At some point you have to switch to a different class anyway. So, do paladins and monks stop being able to advance further if they take levels in different classes?
