    Hi,

I have lost those 2 full plate armors from Beregost and after searching in just about every shop in Baldur's Gate ( city ) it seems that those 2 are the only ones available in BG. Can this be true?

and talking about armor: in all my earlier BG1/BG2 games I always went for the best possible AC without giving it a second thought. But now that my options get more and more limited I have started to reconsider things and wonder: wouldn't it actually be wiser to settle for a slightly higher ( worse )AC and go for better saving throws by mixing in a ring/ cloak of protection +1/+2?
It doesn't seem to make too much of a difference whether Kagain tanks with an AC -6 or AC -7 but it does make a huge difference when he gets confused and starts slaughtering his own team mates.
I would be really interested in reading a few opinions about this point.

Actually, tanking with a ring of protection often gives you a better AC. The only enchanted full plate in the game is a measly +1. With unenchanted full plate, you can use a ring of protection +2.

How in the world did you lose 2 sets of full plate mail? Anyway, to answer your initial question, yes the two you had are the only two available in the game. The one can be purchased in Beregost, and the other is on the cleric you find in the bandit camp.

Also, as Drew states, you don't typically have to make a choice between AC and saving throws for your tank, because you can get both. Full plate mail can be worn with any ring, amulet, or cloak of protection, so you can get good armor and better saving throws.

However, your general thinking is correct. If you are given a choice of Plate Mail +1 vs. regular Plate Mail and a ring/amulet/cloak of protection +1, you are better off going with the non-magical armor and the ring/amulet/cloak. Your armor class is the same in either case, but with the ring/amulet/cloak you get a bonus of 1 to all your saving throws.

    How do you lose armor?

Those are the only two (one from Beregost and one from the bandit camp). There is a magical set of full plate, but that's not available until the very end of the game.

If you have TotSC you can get a set of +3 plate mail.

As far as improving saving throws, that's why many advocate the non-magical full plate WITH a ring or cloak (best of both worlds). It's really personal preference. I go for lower armor class in BG1 -- you get attacked more physically than magically so the AC improvement helps in nearly every engagement. The 5-10% improvement in saving throws is wasted on tanks -- you need your clerics and mages to make their throws.

Two words for you Kagain problem -- Dispel Magic.

He could lose the armor if he plays tutu. Tutu tweaks (at G3)adds a component that will cause non-magical metal armor to be subject to breakage just like magical weapons.....but that's only a Tutu component. One could also lose the armor by putting it on the ground and allowing a couple days of game time to elapse. Only critical items remain permanently.

I foolishly thought it would be fun to install that mod that lets non enchanted armors / helmets / shields break like non enchanted weapons. It's the same bad iron from Nashkell after all. But losing both sets of full plate in the middle of Chez Durlag has considerably reduced the fun factor.

I realize that in in BG1 the best combo is probably full plate mail armor + cloak of prot. +2 - that's why I wanted my full plate mail back even though I have already found that armor + 3 in Durlag's.
The question was more a general one: what if you have to sacrifice a bit of AC in order to get better saves? But I guess T2Bruno has a point: improving the saving throws of clerics and mages might make more sense since they have the tools to deal with fighters who have failed their saves.
    Thanks for the input

Plain Full Plate with a Ring of Protection +2 is best for not only AC but also saving throws, as Drew said.

An alternative to Full Plate, however, is Ankheg Plate. Same AC (1), but sadly treated as magical when it's only monster hide, so no Ring or Cloak backup. You can get two of them: 1 in a hole in the ground in Nashkel, and the other by bringing an Ankheg skull to the smith in Beregost and commissioning a set.

Actually Full Platemail+Ring of Protection+2 is better than a +2 Cloak of Protection.

Why you ask? Because you can also wear the Cloak of Balduran which will give you +1AC as well as some magic resistance.

there is a ring of prot +2? I wonder how much more I have missed so far.
And how do you commision the Ankheg armor? I only had the option to sell 1 skull to the smith. Should I have refused to sell it and he would then offer to make the armor similar to how you get the Nymph's cloak in Baldur's Gate?

I know there is at least one. you can get it when you return to Candle Keep from Koveras or whatever his name is. You find him on like the second floor off to the right side of the main room somewhere and he will give it to you or you can end up refusing it.

Koveras's Ring of Protection is only +1. The +2 ring is found on Ramazith's body.

    EDIT:
I already said that, my dear marilith. ;)

You can get 2 sets of ankheg plate. There's one in Nashkel and you have Thunderhammer make the second.

There's a 3rd set of full plate, if you have the expansion.

It's on some dwarf statue/warrior, IIRC.

Where is the second ankheg plate in Naskel? Or is it expansion-only? My copy of BG1 did NOT come with TOTSC.

A hole in the ground (like I said), by a tree, near the left border of the map. You likely never found it because most people don't bother with the farm side of Nashkel (plus the hole is really freakin' small).
