On Killing Dragons Fair and Square Blow by Blow

Discussion in 'BG2: Shadows of Amn (Classic)' started by biggreenpriest, Feb 19, 2001.

  1. [IMG] I killed that red bastard. Ten times he killed me first. Only once did I get him past "injured."

I fought Compton, the black mage hero, and then came back for him. In doing that, I think it is fair to come back all "juiced up" defense-wise, since I just finished a fight.

And since I told him I was going to come back to kill him, I summoned four sacrificial animals to run around and take some of the Special Bad Things he has for you. Hey, he should have known. This is the only borderline thing I did to the evil rotten snake.

Then the fight started, and I let him have

    Entangle
    Cloudkill
    Lower Resistance

Then I backed away and ran my sacrificial animals around the edge of the soup.

Then three quick Holy Smite from Arie, who was protected from fire and protected best I could.

Then more area effect spells from Nalia. I don't remember what happened, but she was instantly killed by something. Unfortunately, she was recoverable. But not before she casted a tremendous Magic Mis., that landed full force. Then she died.

Then the fog lifted and my fighters went in, dragon slayer w/ Minsc and Gorgon the Big Green Priest with flail of the ages and disruption mace +2. One critical hit from each was extremely necessary.

Lots of protection from fire kept my people from baking early. That breath weapon really hurts. Minsc stood toe-to-claw with him, various arrows from the heartseeker, then running away fast with boots of speed. Sprinking himself with the ice crystals saved him from point-blank charbroiling three times. It was beautiful.

I love this game. I may marry it. Since I have no love interest after I let Viconia burn, it is the only sex my character has a chance at getting.

    [IMG] Way to go!

(by the time I returned to kill Firkraag I was so high in level I killed him before he could even use the breath weapon once. That was dissapointing.)

    Dragon battles are fantastic.
I use elementals and aerial servants as sacrificial shits though.
2 Lower resistances and 1 greater malison followed by a fighter rush to distract the beast. 1 mage will usually unload every acid arrow while the other every lighting bolt.
Jaheira would unleash an insect swarm punctuated by occasional Breaches from my mages.
All the dragons never got a chance to their breath on me before they died.

  4. I am at a much lower level than you guys were when you faced this evil. Everyone is around 12.

I agree about using insect swarm. My tactics early in the game have had a lot to do with summoning animals; after I beat this thing and start over with a custom crew, I'll have a hard time not including a druid.

BTW, I was surprised at how easily Jaheria beat the shadow druid chick last night. I simply transformed into a black bear and killed her.

I fought him at even lower level, 10/11/12 or something... I think it's a pretty big hint that u should fight dragons as soon as possible because the quest is one of the first that u get...

[IMG] Unfurtunely they are easy when you know the trick...after being annihilated by the shadow dragon a squillion times I found a good strategy and I actually beat Firkraag in one try (lvl. 13). No traps, fingers of death or harm. Only me...and him. (OKAY! My party and him.) The secret? BARRAGE! Lightning bolts, ring of ram, magic missiles, cone of cold, acid arrows, poison and tough summoned monsters. If you just keep this up round after round they stand no chance.

Just killed the Red Bastard yesterday. What is good,I did it from the first try.
    My party was:
    Modjahed - Ranger/Cleric - 7/10 Flail of Ages
Keldorn lvl 8 - Dragonslayer Sword
    Minsk lvl 9 - Lilarcor
    Nalia lvl 10 - Melf's Minute Meteors.

I thought that my fighters will so some damage - WRONG! I cast every protection and buff spells I could - the portrait was COMPLETELY covered with spell icons. My char had a -1 THACO (lvl 10 R/C) and 135 HP. I was not able to hit the bastard even once.
Minsc and Keldorn tried hard but died pretty soon :(

In general, all my fighters and summoned creatures were able to do is keep Firkraag's attention, while he got:
    Lower Resistance 2x
    Doom
    Greater Malison
Insect Plague (did 1 dmg per round all right)

It was Nalia who killed him with a Lightning Bolt and 4 Magic Missiles.

The first time I fought Firkraag I didn't know (stupid stupid me!) that he was protected and all. I got killed and wipedout and in the end he was "uninjured"!
The next time, I let Aerie use here wand of cloudkill twice. When I went to him he was already "badly injured". I had summoned a berserk fighter lvl 5 and a lesser and a greater fire elemental. They attacked him while Nalia was casting lower resistance. Firkraag hit the cannonfodder with his wings and they flew against the walls... time for my fighters...
Keldorn, minsc, jaheira and Blade (half-orc barbarian) started slashing smashing. Aerie was using her magic missile (I just love that one!).
Just when Firkraag was laughing (with his cool voice  ) and telling me I was going to die, because I was a fool to even think of attacking him, Blade drove daystar deep into his throat and pulled it out again...
    The Evil Firkraag was defeated...

I just love fighting those lean mean fightingmachine's!

Hmm I have a multiplayer grouep with one pure mage and a cleric/mage and then it is very easy, I killed the Shadow Dragon and Jordan Fierkraag at lvl 10. It's very easy:

Before talking to Fierkraag do this:
    - Protection from Evil 10 ft Radius
    - Haste
    - A bless and Draw Upon Holy might for the Sword-fighter.
    - Put the Dragonslayer in the Main-hand of the sword-fighter.
    - If possible, use beserk.
    - Load with the mage(s) a sequencer with Magic Missiles.

Now talk to Fierkraag after you put your fighers around the dragon (don't attack from 1 side)

    - Kick with your fighters
    - Cast Breach, Secret Word, Pierce Magic and, last but not least Lower Resistances.

Now the resistance is lowered wit 20-28 percent. Magic missile is now very effective, so use a few spells. When your main fighter get some damage, quaff a potion of extra healing, don't do this too late, when Fierkraag is hasted and on rampage, you can be killed very soon. Without the combat protections, you can do some good damage to Fierkraag with the fighters and hit the dragon with magic missiles. When Fierkraag is badly injured, use the sequencers so Fierkraag gets a shipload of Magic Missiles on his ass, with this tacktic, Fierkraag is really easy to kill, And carsomyr @ lvl 10 isn't bad :)
