Nerd-suicide. Not only will they go to school during a holiday/break, but they will study Star Trek.

Perhaps if I had better insight into the world of Star Trek I would have a different oppinion.

You've got to be kidding me. Are they going to add a language credit as well by teaching Clingon?

Though the idea of combining education with a TV series isn't new to me, I must ay I liked my 12th grade English teacher’s take on the approach. She was the biggest Simpson’s fan of all time, so each quarter of the school year she based her curriculum on a season of the Simpson’s. Everything...from spelling/grammar, to movie reports, to essays...she even graded with quotes from the Simpson’s. An "A" paper would get stamped with the word "Exelent!"...and had a small picture of Mr. Burns' head. A "D" would get the word "Doh!" with a picture of Homer slapping his head.

It was an interesting twist on education. Using Star Trek however is a big :nono: :rolling:

Actually, after reading the article fully, I have to disagree with all of you.

The show really does showcase how society has changed over the years. For example, much of the original series was produced as a comentary on the Cold War/Vietnam War. As the article indicates, the show's evolution also illustrates how the role of women in the modern society has changed.

I agree that the homework idea of watching the shows does seem a bit easy for a college-level course, but this is probably not a bad idea.

    Interesting idea.

I know that I'd be interested in taking this course, and it's not just because I'm a fan of Star Trek. Using the Star Trek universe as a commentary for social change in the U.S. and elsewhere is fantastic.

Oh, if only I were a student there. :D

Well, at least it's not science credit they are earning. The last thing we want is people with science diplomas thinking warp drive is possible.

I guess it's a unique way of teaching about changes in culture. But I can't help thinking how limited the scope of the course may be. I'm sure most high school social studies courses have touched on these issues. I mean, this sounds like a standard essay topic in an English class, with all the examples coming from one source: Star Trek.

I think it's a great idea; especially if you're studying sociology and psychology, the changes in Star Trek over the years are an interesting thing to observe. Read the whole article.

Comparsions of Trek versus other SF shows (say Babylon 5, which is fundamentally different on many levels) would also be interesting.

@ Kitrax - Actually I have heard of at least three U.S. universities that actually do teach Klingon as part of their linguistics program.

As far as the coutrse in question goes, it doesn't seem any more silly to me than any of the other pop-culture focused courses. Heck, it seems quite reasonable compared to any of those silly philosophy of the matrix courses that sprang up a few years ago.

For the reasons posted by Tal and Rastor, Í think this is a fantastic idea and should spread to other countries. I'm not a huge fan of the series itself but I love the concept of unity/peaceful co-existence (on the most part) within that universe. Much to be learned there.

*sniffle* Why won't they offer that course on Erasmus university!? (R'dam university, conveniently close)
Seems like a great idea to actually combine studying and enjoying yourself... Plus it'd be pretty interesting to see how they'd implement this in the actual course.
