Well it was an annoying bug that happened to me looong ago. Tried pickpocketing the Orrick after saving, and failed miserably, then Orrick showed his gratitude with a flashy Disintegrate spell that sent one of my characters to void and nothingness, I lost the portrait too so I loaded and avoided Orrick.

Just then, I wanted to modify my party, entered party modifying screen, only to see that my formerly disintegrated fellow companion was nowhere to be seen! The game forgot I made a load and considered him 'begone'. Ach! I said OK, exited screen and bingo, the character was gone! Gone! And lost! And I had saved after Orrick, so the character was simply gone. What an anooying bug it was! I, fourtunately found an auto-save, and saved the character. Exported him just in case.

So what was the cause? I warn you, if your characters die irreversibly,(disintegrate or finger of death does the trick) be very carefull! You may lose the character forever even if you do reload!

It's been a while, but what difficulty level did you have your game set? I figure the higher the difficulty, the weirder things happen, though I've never gotten hit by Disintigrate either. :)

It's probably a bug with the game not clearing the cache when it reloaded. I've had some other odd things happening to me (in BG2 though) because of that. I guess the only wait to reverse this once it happens is to exit the game completely (without saving of course), make sure the Cache folder is empty, and then start the game again.

Well I was playing on core level, so Disintegrate kills irreversibly, along with Finger of Death. I think that case thing makes sense. I will be very careful from now on. Thanks!

That #%x$ idol kept killing my PCs with finger of deaths, then in my last game my cleric/mage had a save vs spell 1 and just disintegrated that annoying altar. And as it slowly disintegrated, I was able to see the blurry image of a mage avatar in the idol! So that idol is only a poor excuse for an invisible and immobile mage with infinite spells. :D
