I don't know what made me think of this, but it hit me the other day. One of my favorite lines from the kick-ass voice set of Eldoth, the evil bard you meet the Cloakwood IIRC, is "There is no good or evil. Only the charming and the tedious." That's a good line, but it's not his. That's a quote from Oscar Wilde, who as many of you know is not only one of the more notable figures in English literature, but was quite famously homosexual and is a legend in the gay community. Do you think this was bioware's round-about, smarty-pants way of saying Eldoth is gay, or at least supposed to be gay?

    What do you think?

It's quite possible. Most of the literary references in the entire BG saga tend to be fully realized in that kind of way.

As I never took Eldoth into my party, I never knew that he said that line. Interesting...

But he also claims to be in love with Skie. Although he may be more interested in that for the monetary as opposed to the physical aspects. Still, your point is well taken. Perhaps he's bi?

    @ Buck

As I'm sure you can tell, this isn't any kind of gay-character witch hunt or anything. I just thought it was interesting. It's common knowledge that Bioware based certain characters around certain historical and/or literary figures, dropping hints here and there through things like dialogue options, name derivatives, etc. I was just seeing if anyone else noticed this too. I think it's interesting to explore becuase it just goes to show you how much thought was put into these games by the Bioware crew. Ya dig?

Hmm, I quote a certain Oscar Wilde line frequently...

Take responsibility for your own destiny, for mere ambition is the last refuge of the failure.

...but my lusts are purely traditional. Same goes for Eldoth, methinks. Crack open a copy of Wilde's oh-so-heterosexual "The Importance of Being Earnest" and see if YOU can resist quoting the lines.

I have never played through the Eldoth Skie subplot, and in fact have never had either in my party. He certainly looks . . . ambiguous. So does Garrick, come to think of it. And the way that Khalid says "The Better Part of Valor" as he bails out of a hot fight makes me wonder if his door doesn't swing both ways.

I wouldn't be surprised if Shar-Teel were interested only in women. Safana and Alora also look appropriate for such a mindset, though I've never heard their voice sets as I've never taken them.
And no, I'm not a witch hunter. As the French say, "chacun son gout!"

Yea, who's a bigger dike than Shar-Teel? Come to think of it, the only characters who couldn't even be remotely thought of as gay would be Edwin, Minsc and Ajantis.
All the other ones have characteristics of paddling from both sides of the boat.

    Viccy's basically the BG pornstar.
    Imoen is wayyy too innocent.
Eldoth and Garrick are Bards. nuff said.
Khalid has that "je ne sais quoi".
Jaheria is the same, except opposite.
Dynaheir has that really sultry voice, like someone on a phone-sex line.
Alora's really hyper, like she's really looking for some.
Branwen has that hippie "free-love" thing going on.
    Coran's really randy.
Montoron and Xzar are probably shacked up.
    Quayle is openly gay. Basically.
Safana is too sexy to be straight.
Taix is obessed with domination, so he'll probably do anything as long as he's on top.
Xan isn't straight. Maybe that's why he "left" Evereska?
    Yeslick is wayyy too friendly.

I couldn't think any up for Kagain, Kivan or Faldorn.

    I know. I'm a sick, evil ****. I accept that.

Okay, so to sum up what you peeps have said so far:

If you quote Oscar Wilde, you're gay.

If you wear one earring in a particular ear, it means you're gay. (So, I guess, if it's the other ear, it means you like to hump water buffalo....)

If you're portrait looks a little...you're probably gay.

If you have a girlfriend who is devoted to you, but you're not too concerned about what happens to her, you're gay.

    If you're a musician, you're gay.

If you're a male, you're probably at least bi.

Arachniphobe: Someone who walks aroung looking for spiders to beat up, because deep down inside, he secretly fears he might be one himself.

Homophobe: Someone who runs out of the bathroom screaming if he sees a gay person in the tub.

Well, of course, with a name like Buck Naked you've got to be gay, or TV has lied to me.

Seriously though, it doesn't matter whether they are gay or not. It's just we've totally exhausted every possible topic on BG that we're having to entertain ourselves now.

Not gay, just a porn star. ;)

Now, if you're in your 30s, single, and neat, you're probably gay -- "not that there's anything wrong with that!" :p

Oh right... about Eldoth being gay.

I really don't think he's supposed to be gay. The guy says he's in love, and he doesn't make any obvious moves on any male character, so until he comes out of the closet, I'm gonna stick with him being straight.

He doesn't have to make moves on any male character to be gay. Xar, Monty, Ajantis - they don't make moves on anybody, and no one questions whether or not they're straight. You don't have to openly hit on another guy to be gay. Maybe he was more quiet about it, or whatever. Bottom line is, that's not conclusive to me.

Of course, it's possible that Bioware just used that line because it seemed to fit his personality. Other lines from Eldoth include "This is sooo tedious." "If I wanted to live a life of tedium, I would've become a monk." "Don't booore me." So maybe they just chose these lines to illustrate him as a snooty, impatient, hard-to-please pompous jerk, which they did quite nicely. But I tend to think Bioware was dropping a hint. Perhaps we'll never know for sure, unless somebody here knows someone at Bioware and can ask them directly.

You know how you know for sure if a person is gay? If they prefer to have sex with people of the same gender!

    Anything else is a S-T-E-R-E-O-T-Y-P-E.... :p

That's it, I am SO getting y this guy in my party ;D

Yep, I finally have BG. Go me!

Now, I wonder if... nah, better left unsaid.

Concerning literary refs, well... does Monty Python classify as "literature"? ;P (I know it doesn't...) "Brave, brave Sir Garrick ran away..."
