NWVault has posted a history of NWCon. Here's a snip:

NWCon began back in the fall of 2003 as a way to keep the NWN community engaged as we awaited Hordes of the Underdark. Several people at www.neverwinterconnections.com had noticed the number of games being scheduled and the number of new people visiting NWC had both dropped. Many ideas were thrown out, until the conversation turned to having a NWN gameday. Being a PnP gaming convention vet, I made some suggestions on how we might set up a NWN online gaming convention, and others suggested we use IRC as a medium to have seminars and lectures. At this point we had the momentum to move from purely brainstorming to setting things up. Getting Bioware's support was quite exciting, and brought some serious credibility to the venture. And Bioware provided loot! We ended up have ~150 separate events, chats with as many as 250 people on IRC,! and set new records for online NWN play. I think the most impressive thing was that NWCon gathered NWN players of all types: DMs, builders, roleplayers, PvP arena-masters, custom content artists, scripters, and PW hosts.

Well, without one of the nwcons, I wouldn't have discovered some of the joys of playing nwn online and the game would then probably long have been put a little aside with other completed games.
