'kay, so my bro inherited my old P4 Prescott 2.8 when I got my shiny new X2... I hadn't changed thermal paste for some two years, so I decided to do so. My bro bought a new CPU fan, in an attempt to lower the noise level of that noisy computer. Well surprise, surprise, I cram the new fan in, a full-blown copper Zalman, rewire everything, and power up the comp... only to find out it's just as noisy!

As the title says, turns out that the culprit is actually the video card fan. It's an ASUS GeForceFX 5200 (yeah, old piece of trash alright), and I was wondering if there were some GPU cooling sinks available. My bro likes the comp... but the noise's driving him crazy - which is something I *perfectly* understand, since I got rid of this rig because of it's extreme noisiness.

So, any way to silence this noisy f****** fan?

I've got two products to recommend.

Sytrin KuFormula VF1 Plus VGA Cooler
    and
    Zalman ZM80C-HP Heatpipe VGA Cooler

The first product, the VF1, has some unique features, including a "blower" style fan and 2 heat-pipes...but the Zalman is also quite unique, as it uses a single heat-pipe to wrap around both sides of the card. Personally, I would go with the VF1 since a little extra DIY work usually has a bigger pay off in the end...but for some, the brand name "Zalman" is enough to say people's wallets. :rolling:

LMAO! So you've been spouting anti-Intel propaganda because your P4-based computer was so noisy, and it turns out it wasn't even your processor causing the noise? Priceless.

Now BTA, don't go and rub the sweet smell of satisfaction in the poor AMD fanboy's face. :p

We can't *all* like Intel chips...if we did, Intel would have a major monopoly suit on their hands. :shake: :rolling:

Hehehe. It's not really satisfaction, it's more incredulity.

Here I thought he had a legitimate gripe with the last generation of Intel chips that forever soured him on Intel regardless of how good they may be now or in the future. Then it turns out his gripe was an illusion, and should have been set on Asus' video boards!

    Like I said: Priceless :)

My previous comp also had this same problem, but the card was MSI's GeForce Ti-4400. The spinner simply was too dry and there was absolutely no way to oil it. Pretty much all vid.cards suck in the area of "maintenance" pretty bad, with all the cheapest-possible-fans being welded to the card and no chance to maintain them.

Guess this is their small way of saying "buy a new card." Or a used one. ;)

It wasn't just the P4 generation which I had bones to pick up with, TBT. But I won't lie I was pretty darn surprised that there was no difference after cramming on the Zalman... anyway, the CPU temperature is decent (25 degrees at startup, 36 after half an hour of light computing, 45-50 during gaming), thanks to some new silver thermal paste, but that f****** video card... I'm about to unweld the damn fan and cram one big f****** copper heatsink on it.

As for the perpetual AMD vs Intel... taking out the the noise caused by the videocard, the old P4 is surprisingly silent. Still, my X2 is more than satisfying, and I'm looking foward to the next generation of processors AMD comes up with. I'm not convinced about the Core 2 Duo.
