    some minor spoilers:

no need to be a paladin to gain reward (the moonblade) - it is enough to behave as one. :)
(Save villagers, kill Torak and Troll, return blade and refuse to be rewarded).

the healing for 1 gold is offered if you are reluctand to offer information about the thief in the first place and need convincing to help return the blade. (doesn't interfere with getting the blade as a reward in the end).

Yeah, I usually have a bard be my talker, and I always get the blade, then typically proceed not to use it.

You need diplomatic skills to have this option. I'm not sure how high, but my 1 CHA decoy with 13 INT didn't get it so I reloaded and tried with my 20 CHA sorceress who did get it.

You know you had me really curious at first, since I thought you were talking about the Paladin "Dead Six" quest reward or whatever it's called.

I thought you had to have a cleric of Selune or a paladin to get it. Not necessarily the speaker, but one in the party.

Nope, you don't. My Ranger(1)/Rogue(1)/Illusionist DG just got it the other day.

lefuet is correct. All you have to do to get the Moonblade is to follow the right conversation tree, as well as save the villagers, Torak, and Vrek.

According to the old Prima paper guide you have to have saved Dereth and Sabrina on the previous map, as well.

Now that I've double-checked it: No, you don't need a paladin. Although my solo DG Rogue(1)/Ranger(1)/Illusionist(5) happens to be Lawful Good, with the intention of becoming a Paladin(1) as well later down the road. But frankly, that'd be the first time ever I've seen alignment play a role in anything quest-related.

Speaking of which - it turned out that a vast majority of early quests, both in Prologue and Chapter One, I've scribbled into the "needs a diplomat" category showed to be anything but. There's exactly two you can't do without a diplomat in Prologue: Inspire the recruits (needs just high CHA) and Bluff Phaen into revealing his superiors. Everything else is governed by your actions and/or other stats besides your CHA and talking skills. Not only that, there's exactly zero quests you can't complete without a diplomat in all of Chapter One AND Two!
