I've recently seen a few stories about businesses banning young children and it seems like it's spreading

I for one can't stand screaming kids, so I can't say such a thing is unwelcome (not having kids myself of course :) ), but am wondering if this is something new. Are there more families that can't control their kids taking them out to these businesses these days, or are people just finally getting fed up with it enough that businesses are responding?

What do you think? And do you think it's a good or bad thing?

I hate screaming kids when we go out. I never ran around and yelled when I was a kid and out with my mother and Ashley certainly doesn't. There is no need to allow children to behave that way and I can understand why some places would ban it.

Around here we do seem to have a lot of parents who think it's acceptable to let children behave like they're feral when in restaurants and it does my head in. However, we also have a lot of parents who seem to take their kids out in order to hit them in front of as many people as possible!

If parents are so stupid or "new age" or useless or whatever to control their offspring, then businesses have to do what it takes to make the dining or shopping experience pleasant for the rest of their customers. It's sad, because in these days of near-unlimited personal rights, a business simply can't kick out a POS* parent if the kid is being disruptive. That would be a violation of their rights to be ineffective parents and inconconsiderate citizens!

So businesses have to do blanket policies that ban the good, the bad, and the ugly from their premises. It's disgraceful, really. The lack of discipline that is rampant in Western society reflects poorly on our social and moral fibre.

When dealing with businesses like restaurants I think it is just fine to ban kids. I have 2 little ones and get embarressed if they misbehave. Which makes me leave immediately, as I don't want to ruin anybody's dining experience. But banning kids from airplanes? I'm not sure about that. It is the only way to travel a far distance in a short time and flying can scare a kid. Also hurt the crap out of their ears as they are not used to the altitude changes or the pain it can bring. I don't mind crying babies on a plane, because I can understand it. Crying or misbehaving 6 yr olds in a restuarant is another matter.

Thankfully our son was and is a perfect gentleman in a restaurant. I do not have any objection to these types of policies.

I have yet to see a theater ban kids 6 and under from a PG13 or R rated movie, and I'm pretty sure they're supposed to.

Everything they do is about the bottom line, so "kids" are just hurting their profits in some way, whether real or imagined. They don't give a flip about much else.

Le me just gasp at how surprised I am.

I don't think the plan would be to ban kids on all flights. Similar to the "quiet cars" on some railways, or the "over 55" housing complex, it would be more of a selling point for particular flights while other flights allow kids.

LOL I wonder how many kids fly first class? Where you're going to hear all the noise is in coach, where EVERYONE'S cramped and stressed and wanting to scream.

I'm not talking about infants, though. I'm talking about the six year old kid who says "but I want a chocolate bar NOW!" and when told by Dad that no chocolate bar will be forthcoming they start pitching a fit "NOW NOW NOW NOW! DADDY YOU'RE AN ***HOLE, MOMMY SAID SO!" and such, flailing around and knocking over display racks, and the dad (who in all likelihood IS an ***hole) smiles sheepishluy and lets the kid make all sorts of noise for 20 minutes straight.

My kids used to pitch fits. I'd give them about 1 minute to smarten the hell up, and then I'd drag them out of the store so as to show some consideration for my fellow shoppers / diners. Sometimes you can't shut them up, and the only option is to remove them from the situation and the audience (which some kids play to).

Part of it is modern liberal BS about "never hitting your kid" -- let me tell you, I tried that **** on my mother only about three times. She swatted me, and I learned -- I learned that acting like a spoiled twerp not only didn't get me what I wanted, it got me a sore butt. Today, there's no shortage of useless busybodies (frequently without kids of their own, but also some of them with the worst behaved, indulged little twerps in existance) who have nothing better to do than make life difficult for decent people trying to teach their kids some bloody self control. There should be a full investigation done on the complainants before they even start investigating the so-called "abusers".

If Ashley starts then I start counting. At 3 he knows he's in serious trouble! Oddly enough, I very rarely get to 3 ;)
However, it's VERY rare he acts up when we're out, he knows that when mummy goes quiet and tells him to behave then he's walking a very fine line

Sorry, all this is just a lot of nonsense. All children develop differently, through no fault of their own. One cannot expect that it's all about some "spoiled brat" wanting a "chochlate bar." That's nothing more than one dimensional thinking.

Kids have different needs and develop in a variety of ways. It's really a matter for the parent to recognize those needs and try to craft a strategy to manage his/her children, as BoV has helped demonstrate.

What makes me laugh is that the same corporations that aid in the destruction of good parenting, are the first ones to gripe about it. They demand so much from the parents in the workplace, screw over anyone they wish, and when parents try to cope with raisng children, while working their asses off and giving these corporate bastards what they want, they turn around take their rights away because parents neither have the time or energy left for their families. What a joke it would be if it wasn't so tragic.

"A family values, Chistian nation?" Whatever....

The point I'm making is that incorporated into that strategy should be elements that don't subject the rest of the population to a noisy outburst. If that means taking the child out to the car or home, then that's what it takes. Some people seem to have no strategy at all, and no desire to do anything to actually teach the children appropriate public behaviour.

Teaching children that they can do whatever, whenever, consequence free, is more abusive than any swat on the butt. As I have said before, i have seen firsthand the results of spineless, "let 'em develop when THEY'RE ready" parenting. It does lead to spoiled brats with so sense of self control, no sense of social proprieties, and often no friends, because even their peers get tired of their self indulgent BS very very quickly.

Really? Given the music blaring, dumb asses gabbing on their cell phones, and all the other assorted noise pollution that we all deal with everyday, that seems very naive.

If you consider spanking and the like to be child abuse that's your prerogative, but in the future please refrain from labelling anyone who does it as "child abuser". Personally, I don't subscribe to the notion that any kind of physical punishment is "abuse" so I don't want to see that accusation thrown around here so lightly.

Well, it is against the law and the legal term is I would say child abuse. What do you do if you strike a child but abuse it?

I think people are getting fed up with it though. As I mentioned above there are rail cars set aside for passengers who want it quiet during their ride where it is against the rules to talk on a cellphone.

If people weren't fed up with the noise, it wouldn't be advantageous for a business owner to ban the cause. Is it wrong for the business owner to offer what its customers want? There are plenty of places to eat (for example) that cater to kids; is it wrong for a restaurant owner to cater to those who don't want to be exposed to screaming kids during their meal?

It's not against the law everywhere and even where it is it's one of those laws that's on the books so that extreme cases of physical punishment can be regulated and not to fine or send to jail every parent who smacks a misbehaving child on the bum. Personally, I feel much more abused when I have to share a space with a clueless parent who lets their children run around, kicking and screaming as if every public space was their playground and other people their toys than if the said parent disciplined their child. Of course, when their kids behave like that outside their own home it's usually clear enough that inside is no different and that the parents are either outmatched or unwilling to discipline their child. In either event, the kid is free to abuse others. If you think that's better than spanking, heh, ok. I don't.

Nope, I just take them out of the restaurant, and they can do without any treats for the rest of the day. Or if we were going to get clothes or something, they don't get what we went for until they are ready to behave when we're out in public. Simple and effective.

And despite what modern day "experts" will tell you with their crap, I can tell you that all of my peers were swatted if they misbehaved too severely, and it didn't turn them into criminals. It's just common sense in action here. Some people can do it without a swat, depends on the kid. But you'd better believe that parents need to show the little darlings that

A: You are loved, but notwithstanding that,

B: If you don't do what your told, there will be serious, unpleasant consequences.

No amount of psychobabble or hand wringing hysteria can change the fact that kids need loving discipline in order to grow up well adjusted. And a swat, smack, or haul (where you pick the child up and physically relocate him despite his objections) is not always abuse. if it's done every day for minor crap, that's a whole different story, but some douchebag in a store whose never seen you before has no way of knowing the full context of a situation, and is really, really unqualified to make that judgement.

Yea, I forgot to mention that... I certainly don't advocate spanking or corporal punishment on a regular basis but there are cases when it's the only sensible option and vastly preferable to threats which the child ignores, especially if the child's misbehaviour is so bad that it's affecting others around him/her. Basically, I'd relegate it to the "if all else fails" compartment and only use in situations when and where other methods are either impossible or impractical to implement.
