New source of light (sort of), that could replace the light bulb...

First, hop on over to MSNBC's website and read the article. Then share your views of this new “accidental invention.”

Personally, I've always liked LEDs. Ever since my Electronics 1 course, I've always tinkered with small circuits with LEDs. They are fun to play around with...and better to connect them to 10 times their rated voltage/current.

As for this new way of utilizing them...I think it would be awesome to be able to a few "jumbo" LEDs (about 2-3 time bigger than the standard LED) bundled together in small clusters, to light up an entire room. Think of it...LEDs use so little power as it is, and they last such a long time. Energy bills everywhere will begin to drop; not to mention easing the stress currently put on our power grids.

I just hope they won't cost an arm and a leg to buy them...new technologies tend to cost more than what’s reasonable. :bang:

    Your thoughts?

[EDIT: I don't know if this belongs in Whatnots or the Techno-Magic Forum...so I'm putting it in Whatnots for now.] :rolling:

    Brilliant Idea.

Right now they seem a bit pricey but hopefully the price will go down. Besides if they use less electricity and last longer they might be worth it.

Accidental my a$$. "I thought it'd be blue, but it was white!" They're both light from a dot; you got what you were aiming for, genius. Hopefully this new breakthrough will render LEDs 'obsolete' so that the price will go down and they can start being used for standard lighting.

It's brilliant idea but like most of such ideas it would be to expensive for common user.

Actually, (larger) light bulbs that would work for a century have been around since the near beginning of electrification. The only problem is, it didn't take long for their makers to realize that if they kept making light bulbs no one would have to replace for a 100 years, they'd be out of business really fast. So the regular light bulbs that last a few months that you get today are not such because no one could improve on their longevity, but because it's not in any bulb makers' interest to do so. Because the longer you don't have to replace a bulb, the more expensive it has to be for the bulb maker to make a profit. If you could actually buy a light bulb that'd last 100 years, you'd also have to pay for the combined price of regular light bulbs to last you that long.

Which, truth be told, most people wouldn't want to do either.

Good idea, probably, but I bet this will be just like with flat-screens and other new stuff: first it costs 1000x more than it should and gradually the prices began to fall. If the idea catches on, that is.
