[IMG] I've just started a new game of IWD. I've never played past the prologue before coz was always playing bg as well at the time.

But i'm going to play it through this time. I've just finished the vale of shadows and been told to go onto the next place on the map.

    My party is:
    Fighter - 18 str, 18 dex, 18 cons, 11 int, 11 cha, 11 , with ** Grand Sword, *** Bow. Will go to ***** Bow

Fighter - Similar stats to above but ** Bow, *** Grand sword will go to ***** grand sword.

Thief - high str, dex, cons. Med int, cha, using long swords and bow.

Mage - med str, cons, cha. High Int, dex.

So i will have fighter with advance skill in bows, fighter with advance skill in swords, thief (all round thief stats) and mage.

Is this party going to stand a reasonable chance later on in the game? I don't have any of the expansions, just IWD.

Yes, your party has good chances, but I think that you should have cleric (or fighter/cleric), because their spells are great, they can turn undead and there are many good items for clerics. Also, IMO single class thieves aren't much better than multi- or dual-classed (I take usually halfling fighter/thief or elf thief/mage)

I found a pure mage and the theif slightly a little lacking in the HP department when I first played through the game and would recommend a cleric for your party. Although in IWD I always went for multi classed characters or dual classed humans. That said, the paladins and rangers I had had the HP and armour class to be my shields for others, and let the monsters fall. ;)
Ah, twas many a long night to play through it, so beware, it is addictive. :coffee:

Change your fighter to a fighter-thief and substitute a cleric for the pure thief.

I agree with Sojourner, a cleric is immensely useful and the Fighter/Thief is one of the deadliest characters around.

[IMG] Cheers for the tips. However, what are the implications of creating a new character at the point i am at now (all characters at level 3 or 4)?

If i create, does the new character start at level 1 with no xp at all and be really crappy?? Or does the new character join at about the same level as the rest of my party??

cheers Ivanji, that's a nice gesture. However, i prefer to let fate decide my stat rolls. Although, fate cannot control the number of times i reroll and recall. ;)

coincidentally, I have almost the same party, except it is my ranger with the advance skill in bows, and I have a fighter/thief. You may have a hard time in Dragons Eye, especially with Yxomenei. Make sure you have your mage learn Aganazaar's Scorcher and SAVE your +2 arrows!!

[IMG] I ended up ditching my thief and dualing one of my fighters to thief. Then created a necromancer, another fighter with proficiencies in hammers and flails, and a cleric.

Did this just as i started chapter 2. So they caught up pretty quick on exp. Cleric was very handy, esp around presio (sp). I always go for brute force with a side of magix. :D

Here's a good stratagy I read online for building your Party...I modify it slightly:

    2 Dwarf Fighters
All the rest of your party is human
All the humans start as fighters and will "Duel Class as soon as the hit level 2 in fighter (this only uses 1500 exp points)...*Make sure you have high enough stats for the class you want to become at level 2...
    i.e.:
1 fighter will become a mage so he needs high INT
1 fighter will become a Cleric so high WIS
1 Figher becomes a Thief so high Dex
Last charecter can be a Bard or can also be a figher then change to Druid - so High Char

Another good point...Make your Mages a specialist Human and Make them a Conjurer (this will give you access to all the spells in the game and the bonuses of being specialized...Starting a mage as a fighter for 1 level gives the great bonus of the mage being able to use a shield and helmet and have access to more weapon choices (same with Theifs etc...plus your mage will start with much better hitpoints. Have fun.

    Thanks Intentioner of the Damned,

I think it's way better to start as a figher then "Duel-Class" rather than being a Multi-class charecter (since you have to split exp for multi-class).

A couple of other helpfulls...if you are going to have none human charecters...
Elves get a plus with Bows
Halflings get a plus with Sling

But I tell you a specialist mage that starts as a figher gets to start wearing helmet and sheild again at mage lvl 3 (not bad exp wise) by that point they will have about 30 hp instead of lvl 3 mage best can be 18hp (if you start the fighter out with 18 con he will have 24 points when you duel over to mage...then you get no hitpoints until the mage hits lvl 3 at which point you get your 6 points there and he'll have 30 instead of 18) :)
