Patch 1.68 has been released for Windows and Linux, including the much anticipated visible cloaks, the product of cooperation with the Dragonlance Adventures team. Clicky. Now excuse me while I'm downloading it...

I have to say, I'm not impressed. The cloaks look nifty and all, but they are not properly implemented for characters wearing a robe.

Also, since I installed the patch the game is choppy, especially when there are more than 3 enemies on screen, whether they are wearing visible cloaks or not. I tried disabling all the shadow and lighting effects, reduce the resolution and no joy. :nolike:

The game ran perfectly before. 1.67, here I go again...

It's hard to believe that they forced the cloaks in without at least giving people the option of disabling them.

Why? It looks to me like something that should already have been in from the beginning but didn't make it because of coding or graphical difficulties. I don't see why one should want to disable the cloaks except for technical difficulties and the latter are solved by future patches... or previous ones, for that matter, like Colthrun did. That is, I see the problem with eating up resources and there's a general shading problem with 1.68 as well (people have been reporting pink on the screen), but why should BioWare have made a disable cloaks option? Or is it so totally obvious cloaks are a drain on the memory that such an option should appear alongside the option to turn off shades?

There's also the problem of the cloaks not really working properly for all the classes (particularly those wearing robes), as mentioned above.

Forcing something that is not seamlessly integrated into the game with a patch after it hasn't been there for 4 years is bad practice, no matter how happy it made certain people. Stupid advice about what to do if you don't want the cloaks to show for whatever reason, like the one given by one of the game developers ("then just unequip the cloak") are obviously not helpful.

Right. Robes and cloaks get blasted. And it's not just wizards or sorcerers that wear them. IIRC monks can get away with them, so Monk/Druids or Monk/Clerics (dex-based) will likely wear them. Or people with DEX too high to benefit from any armour whatsoever (like Nathyrra with a belt of agility +10) might also be tempted.

I liked cloaks in ToEE, btw.

He's very, very proud of the cloaks. And cannot believe they aren't forced fashion everywhere. As nifty they are, everyone wearing one is just silly.

In his opinion anyone wanting a null cloak model is a munchkin, but at least that's something he isn't saying outside IRC.

Well, it's obviously dawned on them by now that not every single person playing NWN wants half-baked cloaks forcibly integrated into the game, so apparently the 1.69 patch will have a null cloak option. Eureka... it's only going to take another half year before that patch comes out.

    In the meantime: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Hakpaks.Detail&id=6934

That way you can disable the cloaks, but still get to enjoy all the other 1.69 fixes.

Turning a cloak model invisible and disabling the cloaks when a robe, wings or tail is present is easy enough, but requires a bit of custom 2da editing and scripting.

There's a note in the BW 1.68 thread how to create an invisible cloak and Good vs Evil II has a cloak-changing script already even when CopyItemAndModify is broken.

EDIT: I just realized what that sounded like... I suppose that's "easy enough for experienced modders".
