Here are today's Neverwinter Nights forum highlights, collected by NWVault. Please take into account that these are only single parts of various threads and should not be taken out of context. Bear in mind also that the posts presented here are copied as-is, and that any bad spelling and grammar does not get corrected on our end.

    Tir Na n'Og????????
I'd like to jump into this long, informative (and occasionally troubled) thread and just make a couple of points. CODI & DLA are both excellent mod teams under talented leadership. They're hard at work on some exciting things, some of which will fall under the premium module umbrella and some of which will not. We are also working with other community modders (groups and individuals). If the flow of information from these groups and individuals has slowed, we at BioWare accept partial blame for that. By their nature, the NDAs we have placed them under are restrictive and bound in all manner of crazy red tape.

With the New Year here, we will start relaxing some of those NDA restrictions and working with these teams (DLA, initially) to promote the content that they've been developing for us. It's some excellent stuff and it's just the start. NWN is 2.5 years old now but, in my mind, we're just getting started. 2005 is going to be a very big year for us and I think this modding community is going to be greatly reinvigorated and reinspired by the influx, promotion, and integration of some great new NWN content (via our premium modules, patches, and NWVault). Now let's all play nice and get building.

    squeeeeee! *does the happy dance*
Rob, how many times have I told you to stop telling people good news? We just end up with more happy-dancing community members cluttering the forums. I can hardly find a path in here anymore, what with all the happy-dancers and the people prostrating themselves before you and the "We (heart) Rob Bartel" signs and the offerings of food and Lego. Just do what Chris and I do: tease them mercilessly with tantalizing hints of things to come. Then rave about all the cool things that you've seen but refuse to tell the community exactly what they are... Oh wait, that's exactly what you're doing! Good job! :D Ever!

Business Prospectives on the Premium Mods

My bigger issue with BioWare's implementation is that you still need their cooperation to commercialize a module. I've been harping on these forums for a while about the restricted licensing of the Aurora toolset, and while the Premium modules are a step in the right direction it's still not open enough. I think BioWare is making the same mistake AOL did: they were so paranoid about controlling the AOL experience that bulletin boards and chatrooms were about as far as it went. When the Internet finally went commercial AOL was left in the dust and they've been trying ever since to position themselves as something other than a dumb bit carrier. Cell phone companies have been playing the same control game, perhaps even more analogously to BioWare, in that you can't write whatever applications you want for cell phones and distribute them. So the cell carriers are going to get blindsided by VoIP over wireless, which will be an open platform. Now, I'm not necessarily predicting that BioWare will be left in the dust by some new platform that allows content creators to commercialize their own products (although it could happen) but I just want to point out how there is an explosion of creativity when some commercial control is sacrificed.
Oh, I dunno about that. The thousands of modules in the Vault, the Witcher project, the Premium modules, all the persistent worlds--I think that our current licensing system has been more than successful. It has fostered a community that is now over 2 million strong and still growing, all by letting people "play with our tools," if you will. :)

With all that in mind, why would BioWare allow anyone and everyone to commercially exploit the tools? What would be the benefit in opening ourselves up to that logistical and legal quagmire, not to mention the hit we would take in terms of community confidence and trust (I'm only speculating, of course)?

I respectfully request three .erf files
The Premium Modules are locked and cannot be accessed by builders. This is as intended. End of line.

The penalty will not increase as the gap between levels increases, so no need to worry about that.
