Computer and Video Games have put Neverwinter Nights and Planescape: Torment on their list of the best 100 computer games ever. Here's what they say about Planescape: Torment, one of the favourite games of many of our posters at Sorcerer's Place:

    61. Planescape: Torment
YEAR 1999: A firm favourite of RPGers everywhere, Planescape: Torment is still loved, still discussed and still sadly lamented. It was one of the first (and only) games to really capture the grimy weirdness of the Forgotten Realms world - pregnant walls, floating skulls, towers built around giants, the lot. Players valiantly ploughed through the swathes of text in the game, proving that gamers will read anything and everything just as long as it's suitably interesting. Indeed, with its memorable characters, great dialogue and engaging plot, Planescape: Torment is the ultimate proof that games can be a powerful storytelling medium.

Clarification: Planescape: Torment is not set in Forgotten realms but in Planescape, as the name suggests.

And now Neverwinter Nights, BioWare's multiplayer bestseller:

    56. Neverwinter Nights
YEAR 2002: After the successes of Baldur's Gate I and II, the 3D Neverwinter Nights was one of the most anticipated RPGs of all time. When it came out, the new engine proved hugely versatile, and the ease with which players could create mods and run their own DMing sessions has proved more enduring than the game itself. True single-player wonders would have to wait for expansions and downloads, but this remains a monumental game.

I cannot believe they rated NWN higher than PST (never mind the fact NWN is on this list to begin with), but that may just be because I didn't like NWN at all :(
Come to think of it the entire order doesn't make much sense. Then again I've never been a great fan of bulk classifications like this.

The real tragedy is that they rated NWN higher than *Starcraft*, for crying out loud. And with its ranking based partially on modability...I can't wait to see where the Elder Scrolls games rank. Not to mention BGII. (I may not like BGII as much as BGI, but I'm not deluded enough to think that everyone else shares that opinion. ;) )

maybe they rated nwn higher because it was more popular, had more replayerbility.... i meen planescape was really only surperior story wise (both the main story and all the npc's) yet i for one has still played nwn 10 times as much, simply because so many great singleplayer mods was made and the fact that you could choose a lot more classes and level mix.

and as a true FF fan, i had rated ff vii and ff vi, higher then both games :p

Torment should be ranked first on this list and surely not below NWN. I've spent tons more time with NWN sure but Torment is a unique piece of art with no equals in the gaming world. ;)

I'm glad NWN got up there, and the list wouldn't be the same without FFVII, but the fact that Starcraft only got 59 was crushing.

On another note, I see that Total Annihilation made an apearence at No. 72. That game holds a lot of memories for me... good times.

Edit: Want to make a bet that Warcraft III is in the top ten? I got $15 says it is. ;)

It's always impossible to make a good scale, even (or especially) with a hundred games. Everyone finds it too hard to let go of all their stereotypes, personal favourites and dislikes, and their own gaming experience. Still, I wonder where these will come up (if at all)

    - Dune 2 & Command and Conquer (1 and Red Alert). Starcraft was a GREAT strategy, but for me the Westwood games will always be THE strategies. They basically invented even the interface as far as I know.
Edit: Yay! Kudos for mentioning the soundtrack, Klepacki rocks. Mind you, I consider the obelisk more iconic than the mammoth, even as I tend to be a GDI fan myself.
    - Baldur's Gate II
Edit: Weird, so much behind both TES... I haven't played either, to be honest, although I recently got morrowind (can't run anything better on my computer).
    - VTM: Bloodlines
Edit: heh, deserved it. I loved that game from the NVidia add - it's the second greatest intro to a heck of a game since that immortal "War. War never changes."
    - KOTOR 1 and 2.
Edit: not bad, not too great but not bad. Being put on the same level as BGII and Fallout is quite good for any game.
    - Star Control (preferably 2)
Aww... You made the Utwig sad again.
    - Monkey Island
    Edit:
    - Ufo: enemy unknown
Edit: Zing! Yep, when one game has fueled so many complete ripoffs and they still sell, you can't but be impressed. Sigh... I need to go home, I had a mission in Praetoria to finish.
    - Lands of Lore (hey, I never finished it - couldn't get past the blasted mine - but it was my first special RPG)
    - Total War series. Each had something great in it - the innovative Shogun with its great animations to boot, the polished Medieval, the reforms in Rome, and as for Medieval II... wow
Edit: Well, I prefer Medieval to Rome, but it's your call. It did quite well, I gotta say.
    - Colonization. Beats Civ for me in the addictiveness factor, I'm still playing it every now and then.
    Shucks
    - HoMM 3 - the best in the series.
Edit: well, that was a surprise. I have many friends that still swear by Heroes... did they forget about that one or something

Glad to see The Black Gate at #31 -- but where is Fallout and Baldur's Gate? Also missing are Myst, Alone in the Dark, King's Quest, and many other pioneering games.

Neverwinter Nights is a remarkable acheivement and deserved a better rank than it received -- THE most notable thing about NWN is the ability to make modules. The amount of replay in NWN is unparalleled in gaming.

Although PS:T was better than any individual mod for NWN, that alone does not rank it higher (although I beleive it should have made the top 25, but clearly sales must play some role in the ranking).

Okay, it's done. Interesting, I didn't expect Deus Ex at the top...

No indeed, and both Oblivion and Morrowind rated higher than Fallout? For shame.

Seems I called it. BG2 at 23, TES4 at 13, and TES3 at 4. I'd say their leanings are pretty clear. Then again, everyone has different opinions.

It was good to see X-Com: UFO Defense on the list. Possibly the best game I ever played! I'd love to see an updated version of it!!
