GameBanshee has interviewed Lead Designer Ferret Baudoin on the Neverwinter Nights 2 player character. This includes character creation and development, the player character's background and the way he or she is perceived by other characters in the game, as well as some other things. Here's a snip:

GB: How intricate will character creation be when we fire up Neverwinter Nights 2 for the first time? In addition to the standard choices we’ve come to expect from Dungeons & Dragons CRPGs (gender, race, class, etc.), will there be any other optional traits or abilities that we can give to the main character?

FB: Creating a Dungeons and Dragons character has a lot of fun choices you need to make. It can be an involved process to create just the right character for you. In Neverwinter Nights 2 you make all the standard choices – plus you get to select a background for your character. Backgrounds represent what you were doing before the adventure, and they have an effect on how you’re perceived by other people in your home town. And if that’s not enough to entice you, they are almost like a free feat – so everyone should enjoy them.

If this sounds overwhelming, don’t worry. We’ll also have the handy recommend feature like the first game, so character creation takes as long as you want it, really.

Erm. Why do you always have to border on the social margin and have a low social status? Can't you ever start a game as Sir Pwnhard or something? Okay, it's good if the whole world doesn't revolve around you, but I remember the insistence on trashing the protagonist a little in the BG games. It was weird when some people called you lord and others behaved as if you were an unwashed peasant.

Heck, even the sole amount of gold high-level adventurers carry should account for some status improvement. After all, sometimes you carry a medium castle worth in your pocket, let alone the worth of the items you own.

Plus, in tabletop, fighters and paladins tend to get knighted even as early as level 4 and it isn't so rare to become a lord by level 9 (it was a rule in 2E with regard to fighters and clerics were given an ecclesiastic equivalent of that). Besides, it takes an idiot to call a level 20 wizard a stinking peasant. An incorrigible idiot.
