Yahoo has previewed Neverwinter Nights 2 and here's a snip:

Our preparation for this year's biggest gaming show wouldn't be complete without an advance look at one of the most highly anticipated role-playing sequels in development: Neverwinter Nights 2. 2002's Neverwinter Nights was a massive role-playing game that offered a huge single-player adventure, online capability, and editing tools to create your own custom dungeons. The sequel will attempt to improve on all fronts by introducing the updated "3.5 Edition" Dungeons & Dragons ruleset along with a much-improved 3D graphics engine.

yeah, but who actually plays "deep gnome"?All gamers play the standard human, elf, half elf, half orc if you're a punk, or drow if you're a Salvatore nerd.

Deep Gnome is one of the more popular races in IWD2. The main thing is that it provides more variety and options to make the character you want to make.

Half-orcs are played by min-maxers who aren't into dwarves. Half-elves are widely enjoyed by women. Drows are often played not so much by generic Salvatore nerds (they might as well be into dwarven fighters or human barbarians or rangers or something, or halfling rogues) but more like munchkins or perhaps yeah, complete nerds who can't come up with anything creative even in their character's identity and are happy with someone else's name and face and generally regret they can't be Drizz Do'Urden in real life. But there are perfectly valid roleplaying reasons to play a drow, I think.

And I think names like Drizzt or Wulfgar or Bruenor should be banned on all NWN servers unless those specific players are actually supposed to be roleplaying that exact character and authorised by DMs to do so (which also means using canonical stats). I wouldn't really be happy to meet a two-scimitar-wielding Chaotic Good surface-dwelling dark-elven ranger in a multiplayer game, no matter his or her name, though. Unless someone had a really good reason for that.

Yeah, female half elves are darn common among us ladies. It's because the race is has minimal advantages/disadvantages - but are described as "beautiful". I fell for it plenty of times.

    Thankyou.

And harborboy, fine- in the NWN2, I'll say screw it and play a deep gnome druid or a deep gnome paladin (ahahaha!). That's possible under third edition, right?

Paladins of all races are possible but I guess it needs to be heavily up to the DM in many cases of demi-human races because it's not like you want your players to come up with exotic combos just like that. I've never had a problem with elven paladins, at least I have much less of a problem with a longsword/thinblade & shield and mithril chainmail elven paladin than I would have with a leather and two daggers human one. :D And I think it's strange to disallow half-elves a class humans are allowed to take.

Besides, I have more of a problem with the the way d&d practice has distorted the legendary paladin knight and diluted it into a non-commissioned policeman or a temple guard than I have with the idea of a paladin being four to five feet tall and having a three foot beard. ;) For me, paladins and rangers need to be approximately as special as they were in LotR (rangers at least ;) ).

And if you show me a deep gnome paladin, or a dark-elven one.... Prepare for some heavy eye rolling. I'd still rather see a dark-elven paladin than another dark-elven ranger with or without two scims. Even if the latter is faaaar more likely.

You D&D nerds and your preconcieved ideas about what should and shouldn't be allowed.....

If someone pays good money for the game, they should be allowed to make whatever wacky character they feel like making. If I want a halfling paladin in a solo adventure, then I should be allowed to have one.

Group based D&D with a DM is a different matter because characters have to fit in with the campaign. But in a single player CRPG, there should be less rights and wrongs, only whatever the player deems to be fun.

You can't deny naming your characters Drizzt or Wulfgar in multiplayer games is lame. :p And nothing wrong with a halfling paladin if you can roleplay it well; in fact, I'd be more than happy to watch it in that case. :p

ahem, I, and I don't think anyone, is saying that certain characters should be forbidden...just that some are stupid or as chevalier put "lame".

and as to "you D&D nerds", that's like calling the kettle black...you're posting in this forum too, remember?
