[IMG] I just got high speed and now want to get a online role playing game. My son likes to play Diablo but from what I have seen of it, it looks to be more of a hack and slash than a role playing game. I like games like Final Fantesy, Dragon Warrior, and Dungeons and Dragons. My son doesn't care for Dungeons and Dragons which would be a go to otherwise. I would like suggestions/reccomendations from other online players as to what would be a good game? Also I would like it if it isn't going to run me $20.00 a month to play. Thank you. :)

There's RuneScape. It's not role playing like DnD, but there's a lot of skills to work on. It has a membership of $5 US per month and that has a ton of stuff. Also, it has a free part which is the same world only smaller. Free worlds don't let non-members into member places or do member quests.

Puzzle Pirates is free, too, and you can get a membership. It's all about being a pirate - pumping out the bilge, sword fighting, sailing, etc.

Both are PG sites: no swearing (though players get around it in RuneScape) or cybering.

    Here are the links:

You can play NWN (Neverwinter Nights) online for free if you buy the game. I'd suggest getting the expansions as well. After you get the game there are almost endless modules you can play. You can choose what style you like as well. Hack n slash, adventure, perpetual world, social - etc. I've enjoyed the game for several years now and I keep finding great stuff to play.

Thanks for the ideas, I will check them out and I already have Neverwinter Nights so maybe I can talk my son into that one! :)

Guild Wars is basically a MMORPG, but you only pay for the game once (at least at this point) - when you buy it. And it's been getting rave reviews pretty much everywhere.

What about Everquest I or II? I'm not sure if there are bills and how much if so. There's also a highly regarded game with Legacy in the title. World of Warcraft's popularity is growing, but I can't tell you much because I've never seen it at play. The bills aren't light on you, either, but not more than $20 per month, I think.

The nice thing about Runescape is that you can let your son play it for free first to try it out.

Ok here is another question. My son's computer only has a 64 bit card in it and as it is two years old plus is considered not worth upgrading. Will he be able to play games like Everquest, Runescape or Guild Wars?

My personal first choice would have been the original Baldurs Gate which I have but I don't think I will be able to find him a copy....has anyone played Baldurs Gate II? I have Neverwinter Nights also but haven't played either online. Are they different online that playing them against the computer?

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice and ideas. I really appreciate it.

BG2 is an awesome game though it's probaly perferable in single player as the npc's that join you really make the game great.

And you shouldnt see any changes playing multiplayer with BG2 and NWN other then missing out on the joinable Npc stuff. (though if you have less then 6 premaid characters you can take Npc's in BG2.)

Funny place to ask that question :p

If you're after online play - NWN seems like the thing to play (not that I've played it mind you - it was made for multiplayer play pretty much though).

Personally, I think BG1 is better than BG2, and is necessary for understanding BG2 anyway. So, try ebaying a copy. Or I understand that the Interplay site returned a bit ago (alas...) - you might be able to get a copy off there assuming that they currently own the rights to it.

Probably. If you want a better answer, we need more details; the processor type and speed, video card model and RAM, and the amount of system RAM.
