I hope this isn't anathema here, since it's not a cRPG, but I was hoping some of you could point me in the right direction.

Velcro and I bought two original sets and then inherited many, many additional cards from people who played far more than we did. We rearely play now and have a few cards that are worth more (to us) as cold hard cash than as playing pieces. I've found sites for card values and trading, but what I need to know now is how to tell what edition each card is. I'd really rather not look too stupid in front of people I want to do business with.

Any tips or suggestions as to where I can look?

The best place to go would be the wizards of the coast site, namely the products page http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=magic/products/cardsets. Also, for expansion sets, there is a symbol between the art and card text which denotes which sets it comes from (the url I posted has all of them there, so you should be able to know which is which). For the base sets, sixth and seventh edition each have symbols like the expansions do (a roman numeral 6 and 7, respectively) but the only way to tell which set they were from before that would be to look at the copyright date at the very bottom of the card, not that it should matter too much.

The little logo thing only came in around Urzas Saga IIRC so anything before then won't have a logo.

I think what we've got are Unlimited editions... a Mox Ruby and a Sol Ring, both from the starter packs we purchased!

Do you have a black lotus?

Anyway, it's a little thing in the middle of the card, on the extreme right or left. It only came out after Urza's Saga, so you'll have to look there. Go to the main site. Easier.

Between unlimited and revised edition there's very little difference with the cards except revised edition is printed fainter IIRC and there's a slight, very very slight btw, difference with the border. 4th Edition has copyright 1995 on the bottom of the cards as well as the artist, 5th has copyright 1997. 6th and 7th have symbols as does each of the expansions

Thanks, Vermillion. Those sorts of details weren't explained on the WOTC site.

It's been a while. Welcome back!

Thanks, you'd be surprised how nice it is to be remembered. :) And I'll check later when I get the chance which edition is which with that lighter printing thing and correct here if I'm wrong.

If you feel like forking out about 14 dollars, you could grab the latest edition of Scrye magazine. It has all the news, price values of cards and edition as well.

Yep, revised edition is printer lighter than unlimitedon the cards. Also If you look carefully you'll notice the unlimited has a slightly different boarder on the cards, it's got a slightly "double boarder lines" look. (when you spot it you'll know what I mean.)
