I was thinking of taking the following npcs:

    Keldorn-subbed for Sarevok in tob
    Yoshimo-then Imoen
    Aerie
    Nalia
    Edwin

Obviously an extremely mage heavy group. What would be a good pc to go along with it? I was thinking of maybe doing a Shapeshifter, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts on this?

Oh and I'd be going from bg1 tutu to tob if that matters.

edit: I am also not sure if I will sub Keldorn out by tob or if I will sub out one of my mages. Have to think about that.

With that line up I would reccomend a class from the fighter pool. A ranger, paladin, or fighter would complement your party the best.

You're a little light on healing at present. A cleric ranger MC might make for a nice protagonist in this case. Or if you really want to beef up healing, you might try a human fighter or ranger dualled to cleric. With any of these options you supplement your healing ability and add a decent tank to the party.

Nalia is basically a carbon copy of Imoen with less thieving skills so there's very little point in having both of them. As it is you're going to have plenty of arcane firepower with Edwin as the main spellcaster and Aerie and Imoen as support. By the time you reach ToB Aerie becomes so powerful she could easily solo the game by herself anyway.

Ended up going with Shapeshifter. My bg1 party so far is:

    Shapeshifter
    Ajantis(made Inquisitor via tutu)
    Imoen level 5 thief/3 mage(dual classed her at 5)
    Xan
    Edwin

Gonna pick up Quayle once I get to bg.

I appreciate the advice. As far as Nalia goes, yeah I know she is kinda superfluous since I have Imoen, but I have never really had her before. I can't bring myself to not take Imoen since she is so important to the story and it makes me feel bad.

What I like about this party is I would get all the spells. I know cleric/ranger would have been way more powerful than a shapeshifter, but I haven't done the druid stronghold before and I think cleric/rangers are pure cheese anyways since I don't think they are actually supposed to get all the druid spells.

Hrm, it is something to think about, though. If I didn't take Nalia, who would I replace her with? I suppose Anomen would be a logical choice given he would give me a main class priest that can also fight really well.

Shapeshifter is a great class -- it becomes godlike with shapeshifter (un)balancing mod. I'd suggest choosing whichever romance you wanted. If you are planning on romancing Aerie, then Anoman is a good choice (but then a high arcane groups is so much fun, why not take Nalia). I really like Jaheira -- she is quite capable in battle.

Thats kinda what I was thinking in regards to Nalia. Sure I could maybe use more tanks, but since when did another mage hurt? By tob I will be dropping so many bombs it won't matter :).

As for the shapeshifters mod, I have heard of it, but like you said I have heard it is very unbalanced. My guy seems pretty good so far at level 6 in bg1, so I'm not too worried I guess. I assume he will be at his weakest in early bg2 since his form will start looking dated by then, but by level 13 he should be good again. I'll probably be decently close to that going into bg2 anyways just because druids level so fast and I am starting from bg1 tutu which means I will be at the very least level 9, but probably even higher than that.
