Most modems use a TCP-IP protocol, and only a very few use IPX but that almost Nothing. I suppose you couldn't join an IPX-game for you got no IPX-protocol installed in the network (and you also don't need it) and I suppose tehre was also no IPX-game available. Next time use TCP/IP to create/join a game.

There is a patch fixing multiplayer trouble in BG1 when using DirectX 8.0. You can't find it in the game section of Sorcerer's Place.

Also remember that the IPX protocoll clearly has to be installed if you want to use it, and it is for LAN only, not internet. For internet play TCP/IP is needed.

You can (without any trouble) export your single player char and import him into a multiplayer game.
