[IMG] Does anyone know the exact rules for multiclassing? I wanna know when do you take a hit for 20%? lets say I want a 3 class char, do I have to keep the three classes within 3 levels of eachother (so all three have to be between 8 and 10 for example), or three levels between each (like 8/11/14)? how about favored class? lets say my favored class is rogue, but I am level 12 fighter, level 4 rogue, there is no penalty right? if I add another class to that and keep it within 3 of the rogue its ok? i forgot my players handbook at home so I can't read up on it.

take Aasimar for example, favored class paladin.

    paladin 10 / fighter 10 / ranger 10
    no penalty.

    paladin 1 / fighter 10 / ranger 10
no penalty. paladin is favored class, so only fighter and ranger apply in determination.

    paladin 1 / fighter 10 / ranger 2
penalty. because of fighter and ranger. paladin is the favored class, doesn't count, even if paladin 1 and ranger 2 alone doesn't receive penalty.

    monk 4 / fighter 5 / ranger 6
penalty. because of monk 4 and ranger 6. i think the range is 1 level not 3 level.

    Good examples teekc.
Yes, the level difference allowed for not taking an xp penalty is 1 but the favored class is ignored.
    So lets do the same examples with a human (with the highest level class as the favored one);

    paladin 10 / fighter 10 / ranger 10
    No penalty.

    paladin 1 / fighter 10 / ranger 10
Penalty. Fighter or ranger is favored class, so there is a 9 level differance.

    paladin 1 / fighter 10 / ranger 2
No penalty. Fighter is favored class

    monk 4 / fighter 5 / ranger 6
No penalty. Ranger is favored class

Hope this helps and please tell me if I'm wrong.

So, here are same examples with Tiefling (favored class rogue)

    paladin 10 / fighter 10 / ranger 10
    no penalty.

    paladin 1 / fighter 10 / ranger 10
penalty. None of them is tieflings favored class and range is more than 1 level.

    paladin 1 / fighter 10 / ranger 2
    penalty. Same as above.

    monk 4 / fighter 5 / ranger 6
    penalty. Same as above.

so this penality works on no favored class? i mean your char will suffer some penality if doesnt belong to the right class and race?

Basically, you suffer penalties for every class that you have that is not within one level of the other classes you have.

The caveat is that the race's favored class is not counted when making the determination.
