I realize this is probably a pretty old page, but I don't think that it's ever been posted on SP, so I'd like to use this post to give a link on Monte Cook's idea on munchkins (or rather, the people against them). I think it's a good read, and I can't say I disagree.

Something I've been wondering - why the specific term "munchkin", anyway?

A very good read indeed. I like this part most:

"Don't deny or belittle someone else's experience just because you've already been there."

Good article. It reminds me of a bit of dialogue Death Rabbit and myself had right here at SP.

The bottom line is, we're talking about games here, and the whole point of playing games is to have fun. For person A to call person B immature for having a certain playing style, while person A is basically playing make-believe, seems to be a bit ironic.

That bloke sounds like a munchkin to me :p

Never had a moment when I've insulted someone for their single-player gaming. But online gaming, don't get me started. When I see someone munchkining around online, I'm a beast, I am the bringer of darkness, I am death incarnate! Little bug abusing bastards... and it was the most fun I ever had in NWN. Not actually 'playing' the game, but policing the servers as a dwarf fighter/cleric. Slaughtering munchkins for abusing bugs in the game (i.e. XP or gold loops where an NPC will keep giving said commodity if you talk, press escape and talk to them again).

On role-playing servers I would have a fit at someone for talking OOC but with his character's characteristics about a real-life occurance. Give me credit though, I wasn't the only one hurling abuse at this person and later he was banned by the DM for that reason and others.

The term comes from the Wizard of Oz story it's a race of small not that smart people (Kinda Like Hobbit MotherF*&*&%&*s). There is a page about them somewhere but I have forgotten the adress...

I know who the REAL munchkins are. ("We represent the lollipop guild...") I was wondering why that term was chosen for this type of D&D player.
