Hi everyone, i'm re running ToB with Tactics and a few other mods.
My monk has finally accessed his special abilities and they are way cool.
    A couple of questions:
Does anyone have any ideas on which are the more useful abilities (i'm torn between a few of them)?
Monks always felt half finished in BG, why were these special abilities left out of the unmodded game?

Hmm, do you mean HLA (high lvl abilities, abilities each class have access to at approx. 3M XP.) by special abilities? Like whirlwind attacks? Or regular monk abilities, like stunning attack and quivering palm? Kinda at a loss here.

If you were talking about HLAs... :hmm:

Monks use fighter HLA table in regular game. Greater Whirlwind attack is very useful, you should get a lot of these. Critical hit, Power Attack and Smite is useful in some occasions so you should get one from each. Critical Hit is very useful against high AC opponents which you have trouble hitting so having at least one won't hurt. Smite, you can only have one but it stuns without saving throw and knocks back the enemy greatly, and is very very useful to disable one tough opponent. Hardiness is also a must to have, making you survive longer. I am not sure if monks get Magic Resistance, I don't see a need for that as monks already have MR, right? Forget the Battle Cry ability, it is kinda useless.

These are standart fighter HLAs. Oversight mod adds up new and cool HLAs which fit a monk's theme more, like Shadowless Kick, different stances, etc. You may want to try them in your next games for a change, they are highly useful as well and way cooler.

You can not get HLAs in pure SoA games as the concept of high level ability is an exclusive ToB content.

Not the usual HLA but the ones i discovered on a mod. The monk now has access to unique abilities like: shadow kick, Lunar stance and solar stance. I cant remember all of their names but they gave abilities such as: permenent speed increase, imunity to imprisonment, a knock back kick that leaves opponent floored for a few rounds and many other really cool abilities.

Depends on which mod granted the abilities.

My memory is rubbish: I can't remember if Tactics changes anything, but I *think* Refinements might give unique Monk HLAs, and Oversight *definitely* does.

If you have the Oversight HLAs installed then this page gives details (scroll down to "Monk High Level Abilities") :

I used this once and recall that Dragon Fist was pretty darn useful, and Flip Resistances came in very handy as you no longer have access to Hardiness.

I see. They are new HLAs from Oversight mod, then. Well. I do not have much experience with them, though I had played with an Arcane Fist once.
