..... i'm starting to wonder if i should've focused more on wis instead of str

my unarmored monk is actually lvl 10 and has these stats:

str 20 (18+2 by lvling up)
dex 18
con 18
int 3
wis 16
chr 3

he gets hit quite a lot and i often have to make him quit the area to rest, do you think if he had 18 or 20 in wis it would've made a big difference or not ? do you think he'll be viable in the next chapters to come (i'm still in chapt 1) ?

also i read somewhere you're to fight illithids later on, so will the bottom int score get in the way to defeat them ?

any help with these issues would be welcome

 

My order of priority for monk stats are dex, wis, con, str, int, cha. A monk with weapon finesse and high dex hits more accurately and has improved ac. As a monk levels, most of his damage comes from his fists themselves, and the number of attacks.

So I would have focuse a bit more of dex. That said, would it have made a big difference if you had started with your wis at 18, and say bumped dex or wis from leveling (a 2AC difference)? Some, sure. Probably anything that would dramatically change your game though. You can always focus on AC in future levels.

And wow, love that 3 int/cha. That monk must be a joy during evening campfire discussions.

yeah he's quite a happy camper hehe

but when you solo you can't afford to waste any points in skills that dont bring you anything except maybe a few more discussion options

anyway thanks for your answer Marcy, i knew i had made a mistake in focusing on str alone..... but now its too late, he's already lvl 13

 

Regarding Int/Cha, I get it. There was a time when I was open to such dramatic min/maxing in IWD. But I've done too much P&P roleplaying in recent years NOT to imagine what that 3 int/cha fellow must be like in a conversation.

Regarding Str/Dex/Wis, you'll be fine I'm sure. You may get hit a little more often, but you'll also be hitting a little harder. It's not the "traditional" monk build you've got, but it's workable.

 

Maxing strength was a good decision, the faster you kill your enemies the more fun and power you'll have. I'd start with 18 wis instead of 18 con, a few hitpoints won't make a difference while wis grants the same AC bonus as dex and makes the monk special abilities like quivering palm more effective.

Someone has even soloed a monk without dumping int and cha, so your stats should be fine. Sometimes you can do more damage with weapons like greataxe than with fists.

 

i just beat sherincal with my solo monk, and i'd like to know, will i be facing super resisting foes further on just like her ?

 

Erm...yeah...you're not that far into the game pet, there's a couple more to come

 

Sherincal can be the hardest battle in the game for a solo character. Other monsters are stronger but you'll be much stronger when you face them.

 

As you can see sarevok66, there are plenty of differing opinions on how to build a monk, and there's generally no right/wrong answer. If it works, it works. And seeing as you have completed one of the more difficult fights in the game, seems that it's working for you!

i'm not getting any xp from ennemies suposedly too weak, but i'm already in the underdark... how am i suppose to defeat chult dragon and other tough foes if i stay lvl 18 ? this 3ed xp rule penalizes soloers

 

One of the mods for the game can be set to give some xp for every kill IIRC

 

You'll get lots of quest XP during the game which you don't have to share, it was enough to get my solo barbarian to level 27, more than enough levels to defeat everything.

well it wasnt really meant as an apology, its more a manner of speaking

 

Free action only protects you from being slowed or stuck in place. It does nothing against stuns, unconsciousness and other such conditions.

 

Not worth it IMO
