A long time ago I found a nice little freeware game (I forgot the name, of course), which went like this: You could buy different characters from a pool of those classic fantasy ones, you know, barbarian, paladin, druid etc., each with one special ability, and so you created a team, which you controlled in battles in an arena. The battles got harder and harder with tougher enemies and so on... You know. So I got this "idea" for a mod for one of the infinity engine games, where you would basically only have 2 areas, first a town (outside the arena) and an arena. In town your party would buy stuff and maybe do minor quests. Then they would enter the arena where bigger and badder enemies would await them. This could be seen as a classic story driven rpg minus the story :). Don't get me wrong, I like stories but sometimes I just like to kill some baddies without the need of doing stupid fed-ex quests, hear the same old dialogues over and over again etc. For instance: IWD2 has some pretty awesome battles, but it takes a while to get to them. Also, the battles in BG2 I will always remember were: my party vs. other party battles and the party/dragon, party/lich battles. Why not extract those battles in some form and create a mod around that?

All this wouldn't be so mindless as it first sounds, since such a game would only provide a more distilled form of challenge, where only the most balanced party would be able to kill the last arena of enemies (perhaps there would be no "last" enemy, providing an endless supply of challenges). Also the non-combat abilities and skills could play a role also: diplomatic skill as a way of finding out what combination of enemies is awaiting you or providing a better wage for your arena accomplishments, alchemy for brewing healing potions...

So, yeah, does something like this already exist? Is someone working on it? Is it hard to do? And what do you think of the idea? Or am I posting this in the right sub-forum? I really don't know...

I don't think a mod like that exists yet, nor do I know of anybody working on it. As for it behind hard to do, well, for a novice, I imagine so. ;)

And yes, this is the right forum for discussing it, though it doesn't see much use as we're primarily a player and not a modder community.
