Does anybody have any idea on how to make a mod that would set this as the main menu song on Baldur's Gate? I think it would be bloody epic. :)

Oh and do check out the song, it's a remix of the original main menu music, and it is truly excellent!

That definitely is a nice piece, but probably way too long for the intro song...

It's quite a good version, but for the main menu song it starts too slowly, I think. At least the youtube version takes at least a 20s to get started. I don't know about you, but by that time I'm usually long out of the main menu already.

That aside, I'm noticing a 'music' dir in the BG2/BGTutu directory, in which one can find a file called Theme.mus. You can open it in a text editor and see it seems to refer to a Theme A. If you then look in the map music\Theme, you'll find a file called Themea.ACM. According to this site, the extension ACM refers to some compressed music format - as one might already have suspected. The site even lists Baldur's Gate and Fallout (1&2) as using this music format.

So if you can find a mp3-acm converter, place the resulting file in the music\Theme directory and either rename the file to Themea.ACM (rename or move the original file to another folder as a backup), or edit the Theme.mus file to refer to your new theme song, you should be ok. You might even add a line to the Theme.mus file with the new theme song (and retain the original song) so you should be able to get both songs in the main menu (I'm not sure how the game selects either song, but looking at the other .mus files, it should be possible to play more than one song in the main menu).

Just remember that many of the files that BG uses are limited in length to 8 characters (and 3 for the extension) - at least for portraits and sounds it works that way - so you may need to ensure that the filename for your new theme song is also no longer than 8 characters long. Call it Themeb.ACM, for instance.

This is all speculation, but if you do find a mp3-to-acm converter, let us know if it works out. I'm interested to see if my speculation works or not :)

I guess you're both right. That's kinda put me off the idea of changing the menu music. I wonder if there's anywhere else it would fit...

Tal has an .acm to .wav converter here. Not sure if it works the other way.
