[IMG] Just wondering about the manual included with the game. I suppose this rant is a bit late, but in the NPC section, why does the manual single out all of the crap NPC's as being great assets to the team? I spent alot of wasted effort get Haer D'alise for my party only to find out he was quite useless.

Well it depends on how you use them really... Some people find him useful. I never recruit any bards, so I wouldn't know. But bear in mind that the manual for the games was probably written at least a year before the game was released. The are numerous inconsistencies in it. At the time it was written they probably still had a full romance planned for Haer. Not to mention that stats of NPCs have been changed dozens of times before the release. I know that when I played the beta and Syl was putting together the NPC guide and after the game was released, I had to fix a bunch of stats that changed completely. In some cases, even whole classes were different.

As for why they don't bother to re-check the manuals before release? No idea. Probably because they send them over to print much sooner than they start mass CD production.

[IMG] Well, if you mean misleading by Elminster and Volo's comments, I would say they are a little provocative, I don't know about advertising for the NPCs. I just got H'aer D'alis because Yoshimo was a waste of space and I kind of dig him. He can cast some spells, and with the right pair of short swords can do some damage quickly. He's got a cool look on the screen which doesn't hurt either. I say Yoshimo is the worst of all, even with that sword, Celestial Fury or whatever. Jan was even better than he was.

Well I must apologize. I realize that there will be fans of all NPC's out there. My experience with the bard was such that I didn't spend the time to develope him properly, and I already was happy with my party. I'm sure he has potential.

My original comment was directed at the comments within the manual that states the following characters (Edwin, Mazzy, Haer D'alise) are harder to locate but they are well worth the effort. My argument is that Korgan just falls into your lap, and I think he's fairly kick ass as well (for example).

It all depends on how you play. I for one liked Yoshimo, he had some not bad thieving skills, was ok with a bow and definately had some serious trap laying ability.

I just found it interesting that the above characters were singled out as awesome, when actually all characters have potential.

BTW, I'm thinking of playing again and I'm going to use characters that I haven't used before: The bard, Cernd, Mazzy.... well you get the picture.

I've generally used Yoshimo for finding traps and picking locks, setting traps when appropriate (great against golems or when camping in hostile areas) and as a short bow guy during most combats. With the short bow from the beastmaster he is pretty good fire support.

I think the trick to NPCs is trying to play them to their strengths.

[IMG] Didn't need Har'Dalis, but I liked his quest, it got me Adjatha the Drinker. Wanted to slaughter him for his weapons, but turned out only he could use them, what about that huh? So I just kicked him off. btw for all you "lawful goody-goodies" it wasn't powergaming, He annoyed me and I don't really take bard as a rule, unless it's a suicide mission that they're there to sacrifice their lives for me, like Garrick in BG1.

My guess is that ragusa had something to do with the manual saying mazzy and haer dalis are good because he likes to play crappy characters such as a halfling paladin.

Hey Caleb, give it a rest. Not everyone wants to play a kensai/mage or a monk or a half-orc barbarian or a Sorcerer. If Ragusa wants to play an unorthodox character, all the power to him. If anything it will take more gaming skill to succeed, so I say Hurray for Donaldus. :D

    Ok, ok, newbies.
You newbie powergamers are almost as bad as the roleplayers.
Leave em alone if they want to play halfling cavaliers and you want to play your invincible Kensai mage.
At least the roleplayers refrained from making personal attacks unlike you morons.
