Maybe some suggestions how to use duergar in IWD2?

I like to play with evil Underdark races like drow and duergar, but I hardly can imagine, in which class duergar will work well.

I would imagine that, like all dwarves, the duergar would be best suited as a fighter, or maybe a Fighter / Cleric. I wish these subraces were implemented in other games (i.e. NWN).

Frankly there is no reason for taking a gray dwarf over a shield dwarf.

Fighter & Cleric are two of the natural classes for Duergar. You might want to add minor Thief levels to add to their hide and search skills.
Barbarian and Druid are two classes that make NO RP sence but may also be taken by these guys.

I was thinking that there is no use for duergar, because of level penalty, but wanted to confirm that. Thanks!

I took a pure duregar fighter as my main tank in my first 4 man party simply because I wanted a dwarven frontliner and the ECL penalty helped keep the party level down. However, I actually found his immunity to paralysis and invisibilty to be surprisingly useful. For instance, since he was the only pure frontliner of the group (the paladin 2/painbearer of ilmater could manage but was better off supporting with spells) he would often be swamped with enemies too numerous for even his rugged constitution. Casting invisibility gave him the chance to chug a potion and turned the attention of the baddies either to the paladin/cleric and/or the summons, easing the load on the poor little bearded warrior and allowing him to kick some behind without being pounded on. Its surprising how often this simple tactic saved him from death and me from a reload. This would probably be even more handy used by a duregar rogue 10/fighter x. Of course, any character could do this with invisibility or sanctuary potions, but this handy ability comes fo free once a day with the Grey Dwarf.

Overall, theres little to recommend a duregar over a regular dwarf, but in certain circumstances, such as those in my first four man party, the ECL adjustment and special abilities, not to mention all the abilities of other dwarves (duregar certainly arent worse), mean that there is a place for a Grey Dwarven warrior.

Well, there's this strange concept of role-playing that admittedly doesn't pop up much around here (even less in IWD games), but still... Prior to the release, you've had scores of people crying for the ability to play drow and duergar. But once it was in, it was suddenly uninteresting because they didn't kick every other race's ass.

I think the level penalty is too severe for Duergar. IMO, role playing is important when you're actually interacting with other people as opposed to AI, and/or when the game actually rewards you for roleplaying, or penalizes you for 'stepping out of character'. Icewind Dale doesn't do either, at least not enough in my mind.

I agree with DanSkibo, IWD games are not enough RPG, BG games are much better.

Yea, probably duergar works good in 4 character party. But drow and deep gnomes are awersome even in 6 character parties, despite level penalties.
