Magic item's special abilities can be used without identifying them.

Although what you read in in-game hint "you must identify magic item to use its special abilities" that is not true. Try to put unidentified (blue background) gauntlets of ogre-power to gain str 18/00 or unidentified (blue background) gauntlets of dexterity to have dex 18. The same goes for all items.
Cool... Identification - another redundant stuff in the game.

PS i am using both gauntlets i mentioned unidentified (just have no identify scrolls, dont want to memorize it as i have more important spells for it as well as dont want to spend 100 gold for ir because i am a miser :o)and they work as if they would be identified (I have red 18/00 str stat for ogre powered char and red 18 dex stat for dexterized char).

Yeah, I already found that out in BG1, but sometimes swords etc are cursed, so it's not wise to use them. I have Jan and he has 2 identification spells at hand every day. That's enough for me...

At Gaelan Bayle's house second floor, there is a guy who sells glasses of identification(3 identification/day). Who needs identify spells thereafter?

No. They meant something else. IMO they wanted to say that you can't use the special abillities such as turining into a troll, casting sunray or anything like that. The magic applies wheather you do or do not know it, but to innitiate a special abilltity you need a word and/or gesture.

P.S. I'm some sort of gibberling herder right now - that's my 60th post ;).

That's not only idea in BG1 and BG2 - it is also happening in PT. They probably ment to activate only cursed and bad abilities of an unidentified item, but since good stuff is also active there, why do you complain?

Anyway, just to add a note, you also can't talk to talkin' sword without identifying it.

[IMG] Sure you don't have to identify everything. Just like in PnP AD&D. You can try it out and see what happens if you like to take the risk of something bad happening. There are cursed items around you know.

Lots of things you can't use unless they're identified. Identify is a very useful spell whether it comes as a lore knowledge, spell, scroll, glasses or you pay for it in a store.
