The charity I work for are running a campaign at the moment to warn people about how easy it is to get tinnitus. Tinnitus is a constant noise in your ears (ringing, beeping, sometimes even a piece of music over and over again) and can be caused by listening to a lot of loud noise.

Right now I'm doing stands at universities to sell earplugs that lessen noise without blocking it out completely so that people can go to gigs and clubs.

Some people will get Tinnitus anyway as they are genetically predisposed to it but it IS preventable and if you do get it, it can be debilitating.

This poor guy forgot his earplugs and ended his life because he couldn't stand the noise anymore :(

That's very sad. :( I wonder if he had any other existing conditions that would make him predisposed to become depressed over this. I can imagine how it could be very debilitating, but end-your-life debilitation seems to be something of the next level, unless I'm underestimating the effects of tinnitus.

Good to see you around, Sil. :)

Vastly underestimating them hun. Imagine a hearing the same sound over and over and over 24 hours a day, EVERY day. I know a soldier who hears shot being fired every few minutes, a woman who hear someone laughing all the time and a few few people who have a constant ringing sound. I met a man a few weeks ago who heard the same line of a song over and over.

I'm here on and off but not had anything to say x

I'm pretty much entirely uninformed about tinnitus, but are those things physiological issues (some problem in your ear of brain causes you to hear a known sound over and over) or psychological? I ask because I can understand the ringing - the tiny bones within the ear are moving or something like that? - but not the songs/laughter/gunshots. Those sound like sounds that aren't there. I'm assuming this is something vastly different than the can't-get-a-song-out-of-your-head phenomenon we all experience from time to time, but don't forget that I'm dumb.* ;)

    Why no talkie-talkie?

    *No pun intended - I mean un-smart.

I am extremely paranoid about getting tinnitus and avoid all loud noises and rarely go to concerts. When I do go I do my utmost to protect my poor ears.
