I don't know the pen and paper rules so I don't care at all whether they follow them or not.

I was at first going to go with extremely important, but then remembered the extensive house rules I have around epic progression and didn't think it fair to hold game designers to such high standards, when I myself change the rules at times.

For me, the game is far more important than the rules it uses. They can use whatever ruleset they like, as long as the game I get to play is fun. What could be more important in a game than fun? (I voted "Not Important").

I would like them to have some standard to use, and they should adhere atleast a little bit so it is somewhat comparable to other games, but it wouldn't matter if they scrapped the rules and made their own up.

Although the rules are not as important to me as the game play I do think if it is called a D&D game it should adhere to the D&D rules to some extent.

Have to add a note here: I play a game because it is fun for me and I don't actually pay that much attention to 'is it D&D?'.

Sometimes you have to choose between the spirit and the letter of PNP. Religiously implementing whatever you can while cutting what you can't will simply make some characters unbalanced. Think paladins not getting anything in exchange for the horse, or for Detect Evil, which NWN1 and 2, as well as IWD2, have removed. In NWN1, paladins' caster level was not halved, therefore spells were more powerful, making paladins a strong class. NWN2 doesn't have anything to compensate for what couldn't be implemented. At the same time, think about fighters losing nothing just so long as 2E's Grand Mastery is correctly implemented where applicable. Rangers? Everything is there. Including companion. Same with arcane spellcaster and their familiars.

I don't see why it matters - especially seeing to what extent people change the rules normally. If changing them is going to improve the game - who cares?

As long as the game is fun I really don't care about whether or not it follows the pen and paper D&D rules.

Of course back when I was playing the big controversy was that introducing these new fangled 2nd edition rules was going to ruin the game so I guess it is safe to say that my pen and paper days are long behind me.

The rules are the hart of D&D. but you can go to far like ToEE. bg, nwn both implement the spirit and not the hard cold rules. So my vote was: very important.

I bought the 3.5 core rulebook just to read about the rules. Its on the nighttable in case I cannot sleep. I pen and paperd two times now over a time period of 2 years.
