I've just begun playing Icewind Dale II (and rpg for that matter) and think it's great. However, I do have a question:

My 5th level wizard only has 1st level spells. There are spell slots open for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but no spells to choose from.

Am I missing something? His intellegence is 18. Will spells become available later?

    Thanks for the help.

Hi,you need to buy or find scrolls...
I you have them you can learn them (write magic)..
When you have done this, you can open your spellbook and choose them..
So in the list are the spells you have learned.
If you had a sorcerer you can choose spells with every level, a wizard needs to learn them from scrolls.
A lvl 1 wizard can choose 2 spells (lvl 1) to begin with, so that are the spells you already got..

    good luck

i assume that you are in Targos? the elven wife of the mayor sells tons of scrolls. You can start to build your wizard there.

As you run deeper into the game, you will find more scrolls. But this game isn't perfectly constructed so you will find magic scrolls coming slower than your wizard level up.

Wizards have spellbooks which are empty at start. You need to find scrolls to copy the spells to your book. Then you can memorize them to use.
By the way, do NOT level up your wizard until you have scrolls for higher level spells.

I know you have a point but I have spells of 8th and even 9th level copied to my spellbook(great shout and aegis) at chapter 2.

[IMG] Hmm, as they said, a Wizard can only learn spells from books and scrolls, since he is the "Learning Spellcaster".

But why not try something else? Like my personal favourite, the Sorcerer. Sorcerers are spellcasters just like Wizards, but they are different in that they do not need to study in order to learn spells, but their imagination and personality conjures the spells up in their mind.

Therefore, a sorcerer simply learns new spells as he gets more experienced, and the more he practices this new magic, the more he learns about it.

Sorcerers can also cast spells more often, since they have learnt them through mental practice rather than spellbooks. A typical beginner sorcerer can cast Magic Missile, the only spell he knows about 4 or 5 times a day. And when he is more experienced, maybe 6 or 7 times a day.

The disadvantages to being a sorcerer is that they do not know many spells, as it takes a long time to learn spells so well in their head. This means that while a beginner Wizard can cast two or three different spells from his spellbook, a sorcerer of the same level casts one spell 4 or 5 times.
This might seem a real downside, but when you come to think of it: The sorcerer can pick Any spell from each level he goes up, say he picks the most powerful level 3 spell, Fireball, he can now cast it 4 times a day! When a Wizard is able to cast level 3 spells, it would take a long time to find a FireBall scroll, and then he would only be able to cast it once!

    -----------------------------------------

In game terms, this means that a Sorcerer picks any spell from a level when he levels up. For example; When Justine the Sorceress has massacred some goblins, she rises to level. This means she gets to learn any two level 5 spell and any one level 6 spell.

The advantages to this is that she will get exactly the spells she wants, and that she can cast them more often than a Wizard.

The disadvantage is that she will have less spells to choose from, and can only learn new spells when she levels up.

Hope that sorts it all out for you! :D
