[IMG] Long time ago* in a galaxy not far, far away... Er, sorry, couldn't resist. This is not, unfortunately, an announcement about KotOR 3. It is about gaming, though.

It's the way of the world - in some countries game developers are being sued, in others - decorated. Peter Molyneaux, the father of some of the most original games from Syndicate to Theme Park to Dungeon Keeper, is officially a Knight (Chevalier) of the French Republic, after being awarded with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Literature) last month. I can only say - congratulations to Sir Molyneaux**, and let's hope he will continue to prove worthy of such honors.

Strangely enough, he's not the only game developer to earn this reward. The ceremony also nominated the "father" of video gaming, Shigeru Miyamoto, (Mario, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Legend of Zelda, etc) and two of more famous French designers, Michel Ancel (Rayman, Beyond Good and Evil) and Frederick Raynal (Little Big Adventure, Alone in the Dark 1 and 2). This was the first time that the Order has been bestowed to game designers, and hopefully not the last. Apparently, the French ministry of culture is not completely out of touch with the electronic age :p .

    * seriously, that happened around 3 weeks ago, I just didn't see it until today.
** he's already an officer of the Order of the British Empire, so he's a "sir" regardless of what the proper appelation for a Chevalier is. In case of another war between Britain and France, he's in deep trouble.

In France we don't recognize nobles or aristocrats, "chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" ou "chevalier de la Légion d'honneur" is just an honorific title so nobody would call him "Sir" because of this.

By the way this medal has been given to so many personalities that most people have lost count. IIRC Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone got one.

I would've thought France still used the Archaic «Sieur». Which, IMO, sounds a lot better

@Caradhras: interesting, I'm pretty sure there isn't anything in the common speech, but doesn't having an award like that mean you get to add something to your name in official occasions, like a doctor's title?

@Ofelix: no I was using the English "Sir" the French would be "sire" the correct equivalent would probably be "chevalier."

@The Shaman: as far as I know the answer is no, it sounds ludicrous over here. We're not in the Middle Ages anymore... ;)
