[IMG] The pop-ups that loaded just now also tried to install that Gator crap on my pc! This is one of the most invasive ad programs out there! Is there a way to request that pop-ups from this company are not used?

    They are TERRIBLE

mine always asks if it has permission to install it. I presume you are able to click no?

We have been having problems with the popups here too lately. A number of them have been very hard to close and several of them tried to install things. One of them actually did somehow install a nasty self-spawning popup in my husband's computer, but we finally managed to delete it (and the 17 copies it had made of itself) by downloading Ad-Aware. I know we talked about being able to buy ad-free subscriptions to SP. Can't wait! Heh- now that I think about it, Tal's probably encouraging evil advertisers right now as a ploy to drive up the price for ad-free access. Just kidding!

There is one pop-up out there, I found it on Outwar, that when you click no, another pop-up comes up saying you must click yes, but all it gives you is an ok. Whether you click yes or x it out, another download comes up and even if you click no there another one pops up saying that you should have clicked yes then it automatically starts downloading it. It getts really annoying, I complained to Outwar but they said they couldn't do anything.

Yeah, I've been having some trouble with the popups as well. On a normal day, it spawns two popups when I go to the forum. On a bad day I get about 5 popups of which at least one is Gator.

Can we get the 'pay for an adless SP' project running already? ;)

Perish the thought. I myself don't use any pop-up blockers because I consider it my duty to see what spawns up... So what you see, I see - mostly. The problem is that when Gator ones are sneaked in, they're usually removed very swiftly, so it's impossible to see everything that's going on all the time.

The company that serves the pop-ups resells a lot of their inventory, so other, smaller pop-up providers sometimes sneak in invasive ones like Gator, or such that are infinite in length that you can't close (you can kill such a one by right-clicking on it in the task bar and selecting close) and so on, but they usually get removed in an hour or two, so there's hardly any evidence that it was ever done. Now, I'm pretty sure that the main pop-up company is well aware of this and probably allows it fine as long as the scum advertisers pay a bit more, but they deny it, of course. But whenever I reported that Gator filth was being served, they usually took so long to look that it was not there any more. Or it still was, and they removed it, and that was that. Until it appeared again in a week or two.

So, as you can see, I'm fighting a losing battle here, and there's nothing I can do. At least the Gator ones now allow you to say no to the install. Before they just installed without asking.

Getting the adless SP up and running is very much one of the main points of the redesign. I want to be able to give everyone on the SP team and those who contribute smooth surfing on SP in return. But the whole redesign is a gigantic project... it's basically more work than doing 4 years' worth of SP all over again. So you'll have to be patient for a while longer. Eventually, we'll get there, and it'll be worth it.

Have any of you noticed the popup that seems to be 10 foot wide, at least? The message is just in the middle though... Weird.

Yeah, that long horizontal ad is annoying too. I'm used to clicking the close box at the top right hand corner, so that one always pisses me off.

But not as much as the Gator ad. I've always hated those ads that ask if you want to download something the most.

I'm sure most of you are aware of an excellent program called Ad-Aware. If not download it from Lava-soft and it will remove any files that the evil Gator program installs on your PC. Also, on that long ad that runs off the screen 10 feet, just hit control+Alt+delete and have Windows close it.

Oh yeah the 10foot. I thought I was having problems with my settings when I saw it.
To get rid of relay pop-ups I generally Alt-F4. If you do this fast enough the ad does not get enough time to send a message for the next pop-up.
AdAware and SpySweeper work well but if something like Gator or NewDotNet has installed itself, they make themselves first on startup and windows cant delete it.
If you really want to get rid of them get a Knoppix Linux CD (Knoppix.com). It runs on RAM and from CD itself without installing and you can access all your Windows and Linux partitions at the same time. Im not a programmer but someone should know the codes to convert a read-only directory to editable in linux. it goes something like "umount\mnt\had1\..."

If a program is in start-up, just type msconfig in the run box. Select the tab for start-up and uncheck any evil programs. They will not load on start-up

I have. I even opened it in a window after copying it's address (it was in the window's title) and looked on its source code, but it apparently is some chain. Probably some idiot put there one zero too much or had it multiply instead of add something.

[IMG] Yes Greenlion. Deja vu in this thread. It is a month old if you look at the dates; since Fade ressurected it to continue the discussion with new inputs...
