Is there any purpose behind joining the bandits? What exactly does it gain me?

In the greater scheme of things, nothing. I never join the bandits. As far as I can see, it's just another way to get to the bandit camp. In fact, I think it's harder that way because if you join you get into a fight with Tazok, who you can't kill, but really puts a beat-down on your characters when you fight him. It's harder, with very little benefit (no items, and not much XPs) so I don't do it ever.

The only advantage it has is that you don't have to fight your way through the entire bandit camp to reach the bit you need to get to; you can just go straight there.

On the downside, you lose out on the XP you would otherwise get for killing the bandits *and* you don't get the full plate armour from Taughoz.

On the other hand, if you've got a couple of mages who can cast Fireball, it's often handy to wander into the middle of the camp when the bandits are friendly towards you. Position everything just right and let rip with your spells and you can pretty kill everyone in the camp in one fell swoop. You won't get Taughoz but you'll be able to deal with most of his men.

True, but the full plate mail armor is one of the biggest benefits of the camp. In terms of rewards and items, you get two very important things - the full plate mail armor, and the +3 longbow. That's another reason I don't join the bandits.

Don't you get the +3 bow in the hut? If so, that's one of the necessary fights so you'll have it whether you fight the bandits outside or not.

Yeah, you get the longbow either way. I was just saying that the longbow and the full plate mail were the two prime items you got out of doing the bandit camp, so I certainly didn't want to miss out on the plate mail. I'd still get one of the items, but I'm greedy so I wanted both of them.

I killed everyone in the base anyway, including Taughoz (tough bugger with the hammer right?). I get all of the XP and the full plate mail armor.

Another prime item, and one no self-respecting mage would be without: a scroll of Fireball. I think there are others later in the game (Sorcerous Sundries most likely has them) but there's one in one of the huts that I always make a point of picking up before I head for the big fight.

Fireball, check, gotta remember that next time. I tried killing the big guy by surrounding him and pounding on him like crazy...which was fine. But being in turn surrounded by bandits doesn't do too well for my poor mage and badly armored cleric.

So then there's no real point to it. I tried it this time around and wandered around the camp talking to people but it didn't really get me anywhere. Besides, I only do it to get rich. 2000-3000 gp worth of scalps there, can't beat that when you're broke.

You're all missing the point. By joining the bandits you can get a really dumb hobgoblin to give you a set of leather armour EACH! ;)

Why would you want a set of leather armour each? It's the worst armour in the game, can be bought for a pittance and is dropped by half the enemies you kill. If your fighters are still wearing leather armour by the time you reach the bandit camp, you're clearly doing something wrong.
