    I started playing IWD again, and I came upon an item called Jesela's Compendium. What does it exactly do, anyway?

    Are you sure it's Jesela and not Elameth? As far as I know (and according to Dan Simpson's Item List) there is not such item in the game...

    Jesela's compendium is an Auril's Bane Item. It will teach your party mage some spells. You'll run into a few more of these types of tomes during AB, most likely. Unfortunately they didn't make it useable by bards. (Which didn't stop me from hacking the item so I could.....)

    Now I remember it. I got it in Dragon's Eye, and it's a VERY good item. The spells it teaches your mage go all the way up to the high levels, which is very handy if you happen to gain slots in those levels before having found any scroll.
